Im looking at this modern submariner date and just want to verify that nothing looks off in the photos because of all the fakes around. If I buy, I will meet at an ad, but I’d still like to get opinions here. Thanks!

The new fakes need the scrutiny of a loupe or high quality macro photos. Haphazard photos such as these aren't sufficient.

@drhombus24 - where are you buying this from? If it is from a storefront then make sure they have a return policy. Second, an AD may not be able to assist as some do not do verifications in store which means shooting it out to RSC (not ideal). Now, some AD’s will have their service rep look at it for you and strip it down, but I would have that service lined up in advance of purchasing the watch.

If I may, would this be your first Rolex?

Yes first Rolex. I’m buying from a private seller. Nothing really seems sketchy, and the seller from the very beginning insisted that he wanted to meet in an ad. The price is also good but fair. I just wanted few more eyes on it to see if there was anything obviously wrong with it just because of the amount of fakes out there

If seller is willing to go to an AD, go for it. This way you'll know for sure, if there are any issues with it.

I totally agree with you.

I would say that with these photos, no one can tell you, I've seen fake daytonas, you could not even recognize that it is a fake...

Sorry to hear. If I may, I would suggest you just form a relationship with 2 or 3 AD’s in you area. Tell them you are looking for a place to put your business, including the purchase of jewelry for your significant other. Tell them what you are interested in and then swing by randomly to just “see what they have”. Talk watches with them and shoot the sh*t about this that or the other. It’s an exercise in time commitment but they’ll start to recognize you especially if you’re not pushy. This is how you end up at the top of their list.

If you cant commit to the time this requires then check out reputable grey dealers like Davidsw or AkTakuya. These guys charge but their product is legit.

Let us know where you end up. Good luck.

Bobs Watches, Crown and Caliber, European Watch Co, HQ Milton... These are safe places ... The fakes are just amazing now.

So, the seller got back to me. We met at an ad, I had them look it over, and I bought it... now I’m freaking out that I may have bought a fake. Everything seems correct. It’s keeping time well, the quality is very good, and the people at 2 different ad s said they think it looks fine, but I’ve just noticed something. The 1000ft = 300m Line doesn’t quite look like the stock photos I’ve seen online. Did I mess up? My hearts racing....

The script is definitely different. The 'D' on certified is directly under the 'E' on yours, while the 'D' is under the 'M' on the stock photo. There are other small differences also. But, Rolex uses slightly different dials, with very minute differences, so I wouldn't put too much stock in these differences. It might just be a difference between a date and a no-date Sub.

I think it looks fine. You should compare it to the date version.

Do you see the coronet at 6 o’clock when under a bright light?

At the end of the day, the only way to be 100% sure is to open the case back to check movement out.

From your description of the deal and pics, this watch seems legit to me.

Yes that’s probably the smart thing to do, but as you can see from my latest purchase and heart attack, I’m not too bright🤪😁

Glad you found that thread in the Rolex forums. I was going to try to find it and link it in this discussion. I ran across this issue when looking for a 114060. It seems that there have been some slight variations in dials over the last decade of production which was not something I was initially aware of. Yours looks good to me and I think after having two AD’s check the watch and clearing it you should enjoy the watch. Congrats on joining the sub club.

I just checked mine, which I've had for several years, and the dial text looks identical to yours. Great acquisition - enjoy it in good health!

I seem to remember that the dials on 2016 and 2017 versions were the same regarding font and spacing between “=“ and “m” in meters etc., then different for 2018 and then in 2019 back to the design from 2016 and 2017. Good thread on TRF. I also freaked out slightly when I bought an 116610 but then saw that variations were normal.
