Question about Universal Geneve Caliber 85

I have a UG Space-Compax Mk 1. It is supposed to have a caliber 85 movement (Valjoux 72 base) but mine is marked 84. The center wheel bridge is also marked "Swiss" but the bridge to the left of the hairspring (if the cam lever is at the top) is also marked "Swiss", making me think the caliber bridge was replaced at some point. What do people think? Also does anyone have a source to a proper UG caliber 85 bridge (without the "Swiss" marking)? Thanks.

No replying directly to your questions but while I doing some research on the Unicompax Big eye, I have seen this caliber 84 in 3 big eye, although it should have the 125. It is entirely possible that UG were also equipping the space compax with another caliber than the usual/known one.
Not sure of anything tho.

Just for comparison, (in case you need it), here is a pic of my ex...

You can click and zoom in for closer view. Mine was also a mk1, with a case number of 2'508'685

I am sorry to say that I agree with you and that the bridge on your Space Compax is incorrect. I believe that it belongs in a late Big Eye Uni-Compax movement.

On a more general point of order, it would seem that in 1965 Universal Geneve re-badged some chronograph calibre numbers, and much more besides, in what appears to have been a wider re-organisation at the manufacture. Many of us have noted numerous classification changes over the course of this year at the factory level.

Regarding the Big Eye Uni-Compax specifically, Cal. 125 and later Cal. 84 are the UG codes for Valjoux 23. Like yourself, I have documented multiple late-batch Big Eyes (the serials dated all watches to ‘65) fitted with Cal. 84. Cal. 84 Big Eyes are rare, but, in my opinion, correct. Good call on this.

To take another reference as an example, we see a similar pattern with the Nina Compaxes. Cal. 130 and later Cal. 85 are the UG codes for Valjoux 22. Here we see the reverse distribution owing the later introduction date of the Nina. Early iterations are all Cal. 130 but later Mk II and Mk III models carry Cal. 85 as the factory-fitted standard. 1965 seems to have been the pivot year in this model line too.

The caliber 84 is a valjoux 23 which has many interchangeable parts with the caliber 85 (valjoux 72). On your space compax, it looks like your vajoux 72 movement is likely to have been sourced from another watch and the bridge replaced with a UG caliber 84 bridge which is identical apart from.markings as noted in other replies. Fyi - the caliber 125 and 130, are earlier and much better iterations than the caliber 84 and 85 which were cheaper (quality of material was traded for lower production cost) and much larger batches produced.
