I just purchased a new Speedmaster 1861 (solid case back) and I noticed that I can see a gear from outside of the case just above the main winding crown. I was assured that this was a reflection but I’m certain it isn’t as I’ve checked it in all lighting conditions and I’ve actually seen it move most notably when pulling out the crown the gear moves up and when pushing it back in it seems to return to a seated position. Anyone have any thoughts? Just a little nervous as this is my first “good watch”. Also just wondering if this apparent gap in the case is normal does anyone know how the case is sealed for it’s 50 meters water resistance? Thanks! Any information would be awesome

This has to be the most original “is there something wrong with my Speedmaster?” thread I have ever read.

(Even if I’m not convinced it’s real).

Hey, enjoy the watch and welcome to the extra gear club!

If the rest of are any indication, this might be the first of many things you’ll be questioning...

Let us know when you hit the long vs shirt indices, long vs short S, how many teeth on your crown, etc, etc, etc...

Like the OP, I recently acquired a new Speedy (if I hold it up to the light just soooooo, I can see the gear over my crown as well), but like gostang9, I'm rapidly discovering that just getting a new Speedmaster is so much easier than the pesky, constant strap changes. Just get the strap you like and add a new Speedy, saves wear & tear on the lugs.

I also have a new Speedy and can verify that the reflection is unsettling and definitely looks like a gear or a hole in the case. It sounds crazy but it is really something that needs to be seen.

Thanks I feel stupid...but I’m relieved. Thanks for the info
Don’t worry about it, perfectly ok to be honest. Enjoy your speedy.

I've considered them, but can't find the Horween style in QR, right now I'm in the process of obtaining an Omega 20/18 Brown leather strap with deployant clasp.
Also have had concerns about the security of the QR straps. I've been using an Omega NATO & a Velcro strap as I'm in an apparently common situation with my bracelet: no half links and not enough micro-adjust. Either too loose or too tight for warm weather. Looking forward (except paying for it!!) to the deployant strap. Have you tried any QR straps that you were comfortable with?
