Proof that the Speedmaster is superior to the Daytona

I think you are missing the reason for a screw-down crown and pushers.

And while you apparently think that a Speedmaster is sufficiently water resistant for your personal use, many people would prefer a more water resistant watch for swimming and other water activities.

You started by saying that you had "proof" of something, but all I see is extremely personal and subjective opinions. That said, you've successfully trolled me into several responses. 🤦

I agree about the water resistance. It's more important for others than myself and the Daytona is certainly superior in that regard.

The "proof" title was meant to be tongue in cheek since none of this can be proven in a strict sense and much of it is absolutely subjective. Didn't mean to ruffle too many feathers. Honestly, kinda thought I'd be preaching to the choir since this is in fact the OmegaForums. It's not like I posted this on the Rolex forums. Heavens to Betsy, one can only imagine the clutching of pearls as I dare to question the almighty Daytona!

No. Just two great members in a spirited exchange. If they weren’t a half a World apart, they would sit down and have a Whiskey / Whisky.
Funny thing is I thought I was responding to the Hamilton thread running concurrently and was referring to @Canuck and @Spruce

Either way. Welcome @TexasMather

The Daytona, like all Rolex watches, is very well made. Personally, I just can't get into the aesthetics of the watch, but that's just me. The Submariner is attractive. The Daytona, not so much.

Check out the prices for these! Some folks like them a LOT and are ready to ante up big bucks for the pleasure of owning one! There are times I sort of wish I still had my Daytona.

In all sincerity, thank you for having me. I'm the interloper, I'm new here and I like talking about watches. And I will always have more to learn too! I'm by no means an expert, just a dork that likes watches...a lot.

That looks like a Paul Newman right? Never seen one in person, but I've listened to people go bananas for them. Kind of reminds me of the way people went nuts for the stainless Patek Nautilus with a blue dial. There is just so much demand all at once. For years they were available in the boutique cases and then boom! 5X the price in 2020!

That was a Daytona worth having. And the sub-dial numbers were all oriented in the same direction, so no controversy there.

I prefer 90% of the Rolex catalog over omega, that said I prefer the speedy over the daytona by an absolute mile.

The Daytona I posted is NOT a Paul Newman. I owned a Paul Newman at one time. I bought it from a university prof. We agreed on a price that was sufficient that he could buy a guitar he wanted. I doubled my money. But check out what they sell for, today!

The one you posted appeared to be a "Big Red." Not Paul Newman money, but still a six-figure watch in good condition.

If the flipped 6 is a deal breaker for you the always misaligned back on the Speedmaster should drive you bonkers. Except for the few NAIAD back Speedmasters the backs are always wonky.

And for goodness sake the screw down collars on the Rolex serve no practical purpose, they are just a design feature at this point. I always have them unscrewed so the chrono is always ready for use, and they look better, too. For some reason people seem to think they need to be screwed in at all times. They don't.

Both are fine chronographs, the Speedmaster came in a lot more iterations over the years and wear a little easier because of the nonflat crystal and less polished surfaces, but the Daytona is no slouch in its own right.

If you want to compare the two brands at a similar MSRP price point it would be the New 321 and the Daytona. Both are hard to get from dealers, but for my money the Omega is the winner, hands down. It's a perfect size, looks great on the wrist and just is more comfortable on the wrist, and with a nicer chrono feel. The Daytona has better specs but the Ed White feels more purposeful. It's hard to beat that vintage vibe that you get with almost every 321/1861/3861 Speedmaster.

From the original post: “Hard to imagine some race car driver at the Daytona taking the time to unscrew his pushers while driving around the track.”
I find it hard to imagine any race car driver, fiddle arseing about with any watch whilst hurling about the track……..if they’re driving hard enough to warrant timing the lap they won’t be able to buggerise around with any watch, they’ll be far too busy driving the crap outta the car!
Timing is one of the duties of the pit crew.
I can’t say I’ve ever even thought about the watch when wringing the cars neck!

Now I’m more of a speedie sorta bloke…… though of Rolex's range the Daytona is probably the one that I’d be most likely to consider……but for the fact that, it’s the whole bullshit Rolex vibe that puts me off. That and I wouldn’t like to be associated in any way to some of the oozing pus bags that are attracted to the brand, such as a certain prick that features in his own thread dedicated to discussing his antics on this most esteemed forum.

Now as to if one is superior to the other, well I doubt there is any clear winner other than personal preference.

I think that we need emergency cat photos before this gets out of hand and civil war erupts.

This poor lady had emergency surgery two days ago but still just had to sit in on story time with the boys like every other night.

The new ones look over designed.

I do like the vintage ones. (For about 28 times less the cost.)

Yep, this one unfortunately has a foam addiction that resulted in.... well... let's just say that this Maine Coon might as well be wearing a very nice speedy!
