Production year of Planet Ocean 37.5 mm?

Esteemed Omegans,

First-time Omega owner and new forum member. I recently purchased a lovely Planet Ocean 37.5 mm which sits well on my slim wrist (I'm male). The watch serial number etched on the underside of the case lug matches that on the Pictograms card in the original card sleeve and box set that came with the watch. My understanding is that the 37.5 mm version was manufactured from 2011 through 2016, but I've read that some continued to be sold into 2017. The Operating Instructions manual also included in the box has, on the last page, a colophon: "Printed in Switzerland © Omega SA 09/17 03090840M". On the bottom of the white cardboard fold-down box containing the actual watch box (like the card sleeve, an ivory leatherette with red ribbons most likely marketed to women) there appears a sticker with a red Omega logo, and four lines of text below it: "Date of Production : 2017 • California 93120 compliant for formaldehyde • Phase 2 • Produced with all ULEF based products" . These all probably apply to the box materials, including the foam used inside.

My hypothesis is that this watch was probably manufactured in 2016 and sold in 2017 in packaging from 2017. Is there any way to determine a definitive year of manufacture or confirm my hypothesis? I've sent a query to Omega via the web site with the serial number and asking if there's anything else I can provide that would help pin it down, but I gather that for that generation of PO the serial number alone is not enough to pinpoint the year. I'm still waiting for a response from them. I thought I'd consult the wisdom of the group to see whether anyone can offer any insight. Many thanks in advance!

The dates for the manual and box are unrelated to the watch, as they are paired together during the time of sale so that is an unreliable source. The 37.5mm PO was not a strong seller, so it's possible it can be an early production that sat for years and paired with a newer production box once sold.

Omega themselves will not provide you an exact or estimated date of production without an Extract of the Archives, which they have stopped doing for a while now.

You could possibly narrow down the year of production based on your cards. You are correct that the 2nd generation PO was produced from approx. 2011-2016.

Between 2011-2012, they were produced with 3 cards: International Warranty, Pictograms, and Chronometer Certificate cards. If you have the Chronometer Certificate card, it's an early production. This is assuming no cards were lost before you received the watch. If you have a little red dot on the edge of your caseback, there's another indicator of an early production model, though those can come off on their own through normal wear or after service. The early production also had "832" laser engraved on the back of the endlink, whereas the later ones were not labeled, though that only applies to the bracelet and could have been installed separately. I think they stopped doing that around 2014, but don't quote me on that.

Around mid 2015, they replaced the card with the new/current style cards that are all-red. The older ones were red with white boxes for the Ref #, Serial, Date, and dealer stamp.

Thank you, Meme-Dweller, for this very helpful information. I only received two cards, Warranty and Pictograms. As you say, a third could have been lost, but the set even includes the hang tag so it's less likely that the card was lost. The cards are the all-red type (no white text boxes). I see no red dot on the edge of the casebook. These indicators would all seem to point to 2015 or 2016 production. The bracelet does have 832 stamped on both endlinks, which suggests a separate installation. I did note that the SN is also microscopically engraved and red-filled on what appears to be the balance bridge, and agrees with the other locations where it appears.

The Omega website page for the PO 37.5 mm touts as an advantage of the coaxial escapement that "Compared to non-Co-Axial watches, the intervals between getting your watch serviced will be much longer." Apart from curiosity, my interest in knowing the production year is partly to judge when this watch should be next serviced. It came without a service record, but I suspect has been factory-serviced at some point since I suspect it to have been polished (well enough that I'm not sure).

It is keeping good time, gaining or losing 2sd depending on my activity level and its position at rest. So far it seems to lose a bit if on my wrist or face up off-wrist at night, and gain about the same amount while on my wrist during waking hours, for a pretty neutral average. I don't plan to (deliberately) wear it in water, but I don't want to run foolish risks either. I do have two other vintage watches that I'd like to give priority over this one in my "to be serviced" budget queue.

Thanks again!

No.

But based on the information provided it's likely the watch was first sold in 2017 or 2018. When it was made is anyone's guess as unpopular models could sit for years in some AD's inventory.
