I don't pay much attention to royalty, but he served in the UK Navy during WWII. If nothing else, he certainly has my respect for that.

    That would have been nice.

Whilst I’m not a royalist I do respect someone who dedicated most of their 99 years of life to duty and companionship. He did many good and honourable things and I am sure he will be remembered with great affection by most British people.

Blimey, if I lived to 99 and never had to worry about where the next meal was coming from or if my children were ever going to get on the property ladder, I would be celebrating not saddened. His only worry was weather he could keep his mouth shut whilst in the presence of an ethnic minority.... And yes, I'm British but possibly not proud

Sad news for the Queen , my thoughts are with her . They have had more than a lifetime together & I'm pretty sure she will miss him . Wouldn’t surprise me if the Queen announced that she will step aside & let Charlie boy have a crack at some responsibility finally ,given he is 72 .

Your probably right , my mum & dad are in their mid 70s & great grandparents several times over. But I shake my head at some of their antics . I joke with them that the world is in the mess it’s in is because of their liberal attitudes in the 60s & they both agree . Crazy hippies living the dream ;)

I am an American but since I watched “The Crown” on Netflix I’m pretty much an expert on the British royal family. I though prince Philip was pretty cool. Was he there when the Beatles met the queen? If so that increases the coolness factor. Safe passage prince, pretty cool job you had. Not saying stupid things can be very difficult, I prove that everyday.

Do you know how long they were married. I’ve know of a few couple who were married for 60-70 years. When one passed, the other passed a short time later despite having no major health issues. I’m not implying or predicting that will be the case here just saying the toll it must take on you losing someone you have been with for so many years must be intense.

I sympathize with the Queen. There's not too many people she can talk to frankly, without it ending up on the front page of the newspapers next day with a snarky headline. Now there's nobody from the same generation as her.

It would surprise me. It was part of her coronation oath to serve her whole life. She may have Charles take more of her duties but I'd be surprised if she stepped down entirely. That's only happened once and it caused a scandal that wasn't competely over until Elizabeth II became queen.

I’m British, but not really a royalist.

however, while he may have been Prince Phillip he was also someone’s husband, people’s fathers and grandfathers.

my heart goes out to them. Whoever we are, a family death is hard. Rip and all the best to them all.
