Powerball and Megamillions: Would You Really Want To Win?

I was just watching the drawing for this evening’s Megamillions jackpot of $494 million. Aside from the fact that I don’t play the lottery, I wouldn’t have the slightest idea of what to do with that much money. I suspect that winning a jackpot of this magnitude is in some ways a self imposed prison since, among other things, it makes you a target. Would you want to win? Why or why not?

I don't play either but I'd like to win. I would take the annual payments rather than the lump sum. I wouldn't tell anyone I won and just live a normal yet somewhat luxurious life.

You could upgrade every OF member to a tier 2 membership. 👍
[And if you have any left over, I would really like an IWC ref 325.]

My wife plays but I always say winning that much money would be a headache. You have to find and hire professional managers to invest it, do the taxes, and you would have to deal with the unending bums and grifters that would bombard your life. And then there is the security angle. Ultra wealthy people are targets, especially in today's world. No thanks.

I say win a nice $5 to $10 million, relatively easy to handle and you could live whatever life you wanted under the radar. Plus it leaves plenty of money for whatever charity causes you would like to fund. The biggest change in our lives would be flying private, no more dealing with the TSA people at the airport, delays, crowded planes, lost luggage. Flying Net Jets or equivalent would be the biggest joy for us.

I would stop working semi-immediately, find a nicer place to live, and then start a foundation to anonymously make lives better.

I'd rather prefer a more manageable win, like 10 or 15 million at most, just enough to delete finances from the list of potential worries and to quit working for a living. Not worrying at all about finances the rest of my life would be incompatible with suddenly becoming über rich, ¿what to do with so much money? even managing donations in such a scale would be a huge headache.

Just a few thousand bucks. I would buy this… But I don’t buy lottery tickets…

I have a dear family friend (father’s childhood friend- like an uncle to me), who has that kind of wealth, he earned every penny of it, he is self made.
He’s 83 and lives frugally, always has. He lives in a nice but not lavish apartment (he owns the building), he goes to work every day at his business of 15 employees (he owns the building), and loves his work.
He loves coupons and is a bargain hunter. He buys his clothes at Costco.
He drives a 15 year old beige Lexus sedan. He is the cheapest man alive but is also the most generous.
He will walk an extra block to save on valet parking, but will always pick up the check.
If you ask him for $10 he will threaten to charge interest, but if you are in a bind, he will offer you the shirt off his back.
He doesn’t spend any money on himself but always takes care of the people he loves. He grew up poor and his wealth has never changed who he is.
He wears a timex.

I would buy all the 321 Speedmasters in the world. Then I would destroy all but the best one. And then I would sell it for $500 million.

He sounds a lot like Warren Buffet

I think the biggest problem is that you become infinitely rich over night. Your extended family, friends, coworkers don’t, you don’t likely have super rich friends already. I’ve told my closest friends that if I ever win that kind of money they’re each getting a cool 10mil. I know I can buy new friends but I’d rather give a bunch of money to friends I already have so that we can hang out and not be overwhelmed with jealously.

I would also setup a foundation of some kind, my wife is a social worker and she’d be great running a program to help people.

Winning that kind of money would be difficult but I’d be willing to try it out.

It appears that I will continue to have it long enough for you to save up for it, Steve. 😁

I would love to win a huge amount of money. I would give my siblings some, travel the world, enjoy sporting events, take bucket list train journeys, buy all the watches I want to own. Loads of stuff to see and do.
What ever is left when I pop my clogs will be donated to charity and inherited by family members.

I would enjoy it rather than see it as a burden. No point in worrying about all the headaches it might cause.

In addition to the one that I already own, I would buy all of the remaining fully original, authentic Rancheros on the planet that are in good condition and available for sale. I think that there are 3 or 4. 😁

I’d give it a try. I don’t drink anymore but I saw this at Cosco. Despite me not drinking I would buy this bottle, become a drinker for a few days.

Most people think that winning a large sum of money in the lottery will make them happier. The interesting thing about winning the lottery, and studies done on the winners, is that after about a year of undeniable fun and spending, a surprising majority retuned to their previous level of happiness, wherever that was. Would be a fun year though, huh?

Living in TX I would certainly go the anonymous trust route after setting up the necessary legal structures to receive the moolah. No need to rush to collect the money, you have from six to twelve months to claim it. Best to sit down, think about it, see the necessary lawyers and financial people, set up the systems and then have those people claim your prize on your behalf. I remember a couple of years ago there was a mega jackpot in the $500 million range, won by one person and she fronted up the NEXT DAY to claim her money. No preparation or anything, but there she was on national tv receiving the check. I can't imagine the bum's rush she got after everyone knew she was now worth a couple of hundred million. "Hey, Cynthia, you probably don't remember me but we went to kindergarten 40 years ago and I sure could use a few million. You have a lot of money, so I'm sure you'll help out your old best friend." Hopefully she got on with her life and wasn't pestered to death. Follow up with past mega million winners show most of them regretted ever getting so much money at one time, it was one big, fat headache and their lives were not improved, and often degraded. People who earn their fortunes through hard work over many years have time to deal with it, but instant winners have an instant problem. It always sounds good to win a huge jackpot, but then reality sets in.

(All, privately) “I’m game to try!
