Possible Trade for birth Year Pepsi GMT - Good idea/Bad idea?

So, I've been kicking around the idea of possibly trading my 1990 polar 16570 and my 1990 no date sub 14060 for a birth year 1984 Pepsi GMT. From what I can tell, based on values, it should come out to a pretty close to even trade. I think it would just depend upon condition and if the GMT were a full set or not.

Just looking for any input or insight that I may be missing. I'll attach a pic of my two watches. The polar is a full set. The sub has a Rolex service card from 2004 I believe. Love both of the watches but really like the idea of a birth year watch and I do love the older Pepsi GMTs with the open 6 and 9 date fonts.

The only thing I can't wrap my head around and what holds me back is how dang expensive the GMTs are! I mean, from a logical standpoint, the polar is pretty much the same watch with the same movement, just doesn't have the rotating bi-color bezel.

Anyways any insights and thoughts are welcomed. Thank you OF! Pics below:

Not very helpful on the trade fairness, but that is one of the nicest looking polar explorers I’ve seen - would be difficult to replace! No doubt the 1984 gmt is a stunning model also saying that - do you have photos of the trade?

Those are both good looking pieces with nice patina and I would not do that trade.

Agreed.

Be patient and save for the GMT instead.

Do you know how nice that image would look with a 1984 Pepsi in it? Let me help you out:

That polar is beautiful. Both of your watches are very good examples.

If I where you I would not trade these. Just wait for a bit and get a savings plan.

I would hang on both the explorer and sub. As said above, both great examples with lovely patina.

I've recently picked up a 14060 with tritium lume, no patina unfortunately on mine, and I would have loved my one to have looked like your 14060!

Value wise it might sound good but two for one never sounds good to me.

If you ever wanted to change back you would probably never find the same deal in reverse. (+ that Explorer is sweet)

Having already had your target GMT I would take your Sub any day over it, beautiful patina! I've developed an intense dislike of the cyclops...despite it being somewhat of a classic Rolex hallmark I find them to be utterly primitive and superfluous, not to mention butt ugly (IMPO!).

Keep your 2, save for the/a GMT

Those are both beautiful watches, BUT, nothing matches a nice matte 16750. They’re are a lot more desirable and rarer reference.

I’d personally pull the trigger, you can always find the Sub and Explorer, but ‘750’s are getting difficult to find.

I wouldn’t sell either of yours off- those are some pretty perfect specimens and you will regret it after the honeymoon phase with your GMT wears off.

You also have the dilemma of matte dial or the service dial- which was an “upgrade” by Rolex if you ever sent it back to them for any kind of service- they just changed the matte dial to the newer gloss one with the white gold indices wether it needed it or not- and you had no clue until it came back to you. Luckily my ‘83 never went back to Rolex. The matte dial will cost you though.

The GMT’s are in a bubble. Anytime I post a WRUW pic of mine on any forum, I get PM’s asking to sell....it’s nuts. If you’re patient, the market will level back out and prices come down...probably during the upcoming recession (not being sarcastic), so have your gold bars ready to trade.

I would keep your polar and no date and save up to purchase a pepsi. Those 2 you have are incredible examples of those watches. 29 years old and have that gentle, non-abused, well cared for patina. Put the idea of adding a pepsi on the back burner, save up, then when you're ready, either you still want the pepsi or your love affair with it is over, and you have 10k plus in the bank, PLUS your stunning polar and no date 😁

If your birth year GMT was a matte dial, I would consider it. But I would never make that trade for a gold-surround dial GMT, even a full set. Is this hypothetical, or do you actually have someone wanting to make this trade?

As most have stated before me. Hang on to this pair very nice looking examples, and save up for your GMT. In some time soon you 'll thank yourself for it.
That cream on that white dial just looks great.👍

I’m gonna say something different from but with the same conclusion:

1. “birth year” is a scam: it’s dead last in the things to consider when picking a watch, if its production year matches your birth year it’s a nice bonus, but not something that will ever tip the needle for me. Ignoring the fact that rarely you can be sure of the actual production year of a watch.

2. In general, purely aesthetically, I like the polar Explorer II better than the GMT (white dial tool watches are super cool), don’t be caught in the “pepsi” hype just because everyone wants it.

I’ve had my GMT for 18 years, it’s a great watch and I’ve beaten the shit out of it (it was just an old Rolex when I bought- nothing special). If I didn’t own it, I wouldn’t pay half of what they are fetching to buy one now....far cooler watches out there for less money.

Your polar is a top tier piece, especially as full set, I would never trade that. You would be trading a 10/10 piece full set for a 5/10 piece non full set.

It’s hypothetical. Have just been kicking the idea around but I’m so glad I posted this and got everyone’s insights. I do think I would later regret it.
