Portuguese Calendar Discs for Omega Cal. 381 Ref. 2471

Hi everyone,

I have a steel Ref. 2471/1 Cosmic Triple Calendar Moonphase, Cal. 381 / 27DLPC, serial in the 10.93 million range. It came from my grandfather and has been in the family since.

It has the European Portuguese calendar - full words, DOM / MAIO in the apertures - rather than the Brazilian "Church Latin" version (2aF, 3aF, 4aF…) that seems to turn up more often. I hadn't realised until this week that Omega made both.

It's currently at the Omega boutique in Lisbon for a mechanical service. They've come back saying both calendar discs are damaged and cannot be kept, and that Omega can only supply English, French or German replacements. I've authorised English so the calendar works, and arranged for both original Portuguese discs to be returned to me.

Before that's finalised I wanted to ask:

Has anyone ever seen Portuguese calendar discs for the 381 surface as spares - either the European or Brazilian version? Ernst Westphal lists 22 parts for the 381, including every jumper and corrector in the calendar train, but no discs in any language, which makes me think these are the genuinely scarce part.

And separately - for those who've dealt with damaged calendar discs of this era, is there any realistic chance of getting them working again mechanically without disturbing the printing? I haven't seen them yet so I don't know whether it's corrosion, distortion or worn teeth.

Honestly I can't say whether the calendar worked, because the watch was fully stuck. So the movement was never running for me to see the calendar advance. And I didn't try to advance them with the pushers to see if they would move.

Omega haven't been very forthcoming on the detail. I asked whether the damage was cosmetic or physical and got "they are damaged, so they have to be replaced," nothing more. They have confirmed in writing that the original discs come back to me, which was the main thing I wanted to secure.

Your suggestion is what I'll do cristos71 - let the English discs go in so it functions, get the originals back, and have an independent watchmaker look at them properly. If they turn out to be serviceable I can always swap them back.

And good point about having intact English ones MtV - that does take the pressure off. Anything Portuguese that turns up later becomes an upgrade rather than a repair I need. A whole donor watch could be more than the swap is worth, but loose discs would be a different story. It all depends on pricing really.

I'll set up saved eBay searches and see what turns up over time.

One thing I turned up while digging: the discs aren't separate parts in the Omega catalogue - they're 381.1516 (day star with dial disk) and 381.1519 (month star with dial disk), star wheel and printed disc as a single assembly. Might explain why none of the parts suppliers I've checked list them in any language, even though they all stock the jumpers and correctors.
