Hello to all,

I am new with pocket watches and I believe I already did the first newbie mistake, I bought the watch because the work on the caliber I found it very special (I guess due to my ignorance ), next week I'll get the watch so I can share more pictures. I have tried for hours to find more info but no chance, hope some of you can help me.
thanks a lot

The decorating is indeed "special" so since you bought it for that reason how did you make a newbie mistake? The thing is cool as heck!

Well obviously it's not a Vacheron & Constantin. You did buy it for the looks of the movement like you said right?

well, before Vacheron Constantin was that company, Mr. Jean-Marc Vacheron already build some watches on his own.... so that's my hope , newbie hope. thanks for your comments

Well I hope for you too. Would be extra cool if you snagged it cheap and get that added historical bonus along with enjoying the looks of the movement. I wish I knew more about pocket watches but from what I can see the watch sure looks like it's the real deal.

Not really. Maybe head over to NAWCC boards for that?

I will say the the “Vacheron Jean” engraving looks modern in contrast with the other engraving on the cover.

Other than that, I know nothing.

Since it has a cylinder escapement, I hope you don't expect it to work, much less keep time.

Good thing it's pretty....

Maybe add "Pocket Watch" to the thread title? There are quite a few people on OF that know a lot about pocket watches. But not everyone reads every single thread that gets posted, and the title does not indicate this is about a pocket watch.

Not a pocket watch expert but the engraving is nowhere near Vacheron standards unless this was Jean’s school project.

Maybe in the land of the Alps the name Jean Vacheron is as common a name as Tony Russo would be in NY's little Italy? 😁

It has an unsigned dial and unsigned movement, and a cuvette that is signed in what looks to be a later style of engraving that looks added on (and unbalanced). Many cheap watches were signed to be passed off as a higher grade article then they were. Yes, forgeries have been around for hundreds of years. I hope the OP didn't pay a lot for this watch as I don't think it has much historical value.

Amateurish engraving, the pattern is not appealing to my eye and seems no aesthetic care was taken. Hate to come across as harsh, and I appreciate the time put into the work, but aside from the movement engraving the text is misaligned, not centered, poorly spaced. Reminds me of Eastern European work often done to watches to make them feel more special, or how they skeletonize a movement, but poorly or way over the top. Also, "Vacheron Jean" was added later as it's in another hand altogether.
