Too many watches get sold to members and most times we never have a record of who purchased it.
It’s not always the case, but it is often easy to piece together by looking through the seller feedback forum.

At least on Reddit, many follow this practice, and the seller usually publicly responds with “replied”.

I always assumed this served 2 functions:

1- to create some public trail of the transaction
2- to settle any grievances of potential buyers who felt their offer was ignored

To be honest, at the end of the day I don’t think either of those two points have much value in a private sale, but I still follow the etiquette anyway.

EDIT: i think it’s also a way for the subreddit mods to catch known scammers (assuming sellers only respond to buyers that reply on the sales thread publicly).
