Hello, I got this from my dad for my 40th birthday in February this year, he bought it for himself when he turned 21 when he was stationed in Germany in the Army, hence the NAAFI on the guarantee. I had always admired it as a child and he promised it to me when I turned 40. I have a few questions and would appreciate it if any body could answer them, here goes.......
I know it’s on the ‘wrong’ strap as he bought a new one in 2003 (he kept the receipt), because the original strap came apart, as shown in the photos - I do intend to have this repaired. The newer strap is ref 1171/1 does the newer strap have any value? and is it a Speedmaster strap?
It also has the misprint 220 bezel. Is this likely to be an Omega service replacement? As from what I can find on the internet these weren’t about til early the 70’s. My Dad cannot recall having a new bezel fitted so I wonder if Omega just swapped it over on a service, or am I wrong with this info?
The buckle on the original strap looks different to those I have seen on other 1968 models, is this correct? or is this also a replacement? I believe the strap is the original one, it has 516 end links.
Has this got the 321 movement?
I know it has had a new glass fitted as the original got chipped and eventually cracked years later, it has the Omega logo in the centre of the glass, so I presume it’s an authentic part.
The top pusher was also replaced last year as it came apart. I believe original parts were used. It serviced and cleaned internally last October by a local watch specialist. It was also pressure tested and passed. I stressed to my Dad that I didn’t want it polishing as I like the originality of it.
Also, it hasn’t ever be relumed.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

The strap is Stainless Steel, the lighting in my Kitchen has made it look Copper.

The original bracelet is not a difficult fix but it won't be cheap, STS could re build and spring it for you, it is missing the original clasp and has been replaced by a British made DS&S (Dennis Shackman and Sons) clasp, this is genuine omega but would not have come with this bracelet, probably 1039 or the likes. Overall a nice looking watch.

Will leave others to pass comment on bezel etc

Cheers Tom

you are correct, the 220 bezel was a short timeframe in the early 70's... not 145.012. yours should have a DON bezel.
great heirloom all the same, make sure you have the movement serviced if it's been more than a few years.

Thank you, in your opinion would it be worth trying to get a DON bezel and selling the 220 bezel?

Since I assume you are not planning to sell the watch, this is 100% a matter of personal taste. The misprint bezel is a legit and authentic Omega part, and has been a physical part of your father's watch for a LONG time. You could also choose to replace it with a period-correct DON bezel that has no historical connection to your father's watch. It's simply a matter of what would give you more pleasure, and I think that different people would have different feelings about it.

Cheers Dan, yes, you assumed correctly, that is a very good point, that 220 bezel has been on nearly 50 years, so that will stay, thank you for pointing that out

ymmv.... a decent DON can be $1500+... i don't know what a 220 goes for, but it would help offset the cost.

if it is what your dad has worn for years... i'd leave it at that.

<<oops! same point, but better stated right above>>

@Dan321 Please move the chrono hand out of the way and post a clear picture of the “OMEGA Speedmaster PROFESSIONAL” print on the dial.

Redial (at best) or a fake dial.
The applied metal logo shape is wrong.
OMEGA Speedmaster PROFESIONAL print is wrong.
T SWISS MADE T (at the bottom) is very wonky and sits too low.
