Cute like a baby tiger- until it tries to mate with your face 😲

Ah. So it's a life lesson. Consider me forewarned.

(It's going to take awhile to get THAT image out of my head...)

Why would you be putting those parts near your face?

I did a few assignments for weeks on end in the Great Smoky Mountains and they would give me a radio to check in when I was doing remote locations. I would hear the chatter all day and the most frequent calls were visitors trying to feed or “rescue” a bear cub. The Ranger response to the call was always - “on our way to clear the location”. So cute and cuddly....then mamma comes along.

Just making a joke about how we all love cute cuddly animals but forget that they are wild animals- you never know when those claws will come out.

Reminds me of the story of a mom putting honey on her baby's hand to get the bear to lick it (hey, you started it.)

Sounds like a great job. I did a summer in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe area in upstate Minnesota. It's a lot like it's name. One of my jobs was going to the dump. There'd be 15 bears there down in the pit. After tossing in the trash I'd sit and watch them argue about who got what. There was one guy I called the teenager because he was long and lanky and about 2/3 the size of the others. One day he came up to where I was watching and sat about 12 feet away with his left paw over his right and watched the activity down below like i was doing. I knew it wasn't safe but it was mesmerizing. After a short spell he got up and starting strolling towards the truck so I waved my arms and yelled (don't do this with a grizzly) and he changed directions. That image is etched in my brain.

And that ladies and gentlemen is how you hijack a thread...

When I first got here my perspective on the costs of service was totally skewed because of the relationship I have with my watchmaker.
I had used an authorized service center before him for my Rolex GMT and that cost me $500 (that was 15 years ago) just for a clean and lube (and whatever else they did). I bristled (considering that was 1/4 what I paid for it) but figured it was the cost of ownership (like owning a Jag- $3k for brakes is just what it is).
When I found my guy (his daughter was an intern at my work and we later employed her after she graduated- she became like a little sister to me)- i got lucky. So yes, I thought a service cost $150+ parts and I had been ripped off by the RSC.
Since joining here I have come to realize that $300-500 is actually about market rate for most watchmakers, up to $800 for complications like chronographs- and this may not included parts. There is also the issue of access to factory parts- my watchmaker is not an authorized Rolex service provider, nor does he have a Swatch Group account, but he has a network of other watchmakers and collectors from whom he can get anything he needs. Factory authorized providers have to make huge investments in training and specialized equipment- so it goes without argument that their cost for service will be higher to recoup their investments and cover the time it takes to follow the factory service protocols without cutting corners.

As has been discussed in multiple threads, some people here have multiple watchmakers they use for different watches (I have over 50)- some they let work on Elgin’s and Benrus’ but wouldn’t take their JLC to them- not for fear they may screw it up, it’s just out of their area of expertise. A wizard mechanic with a BMW may not have expertise with an Austin Healey- there are specialists for Brit cars that have a different kind of sensibility and network of resources.
My long route to the point is that everyone’s experience with watchmakers is different, as is our experiences with mechanics, or even physicians. You need to build a relationship based on trust and communication and have faith in their expertise. What they charge is irrelevant if you are pleased with the quality of their work.
Saying the cost is too high for service without knowing the quality of the work performed by or expertise of a watchmaker is just as ignorant as saying the cost is too low.
Dear god, I had to change garages for the V8 recently, as the old one that used to be very good had lost interest and eventually went bust (and it was very sad, because the loss of interest had a lot to do with health issues of the owner). Took the V8 to a different garage, paid the bill, and thought, hmm, that's expensive, but nothing is too good for my baby. Got into the car and after two hundred yards realised why it was expensive - they had obviously adjusted things that had not been adjusted in years. He's going back there again.

It wasn't the claws coming out that worried him ...

Beautiful watch! However, I'm in save up mode for the next couple of months. 😁 but I may just end up eating my words. Thanks for the recommendation 😀
I have been in save up mode for the last couple years. 50+ watches later and I’m still no closer to what I was saving for...come to think of it, I can’t remember what I was saving for anymore 😵‍💫

What's a girl to do until October? Did I mention I'm waiting on a pre-paid Seiko SPB149? ::psy::

There’s your blue.
I tend to prefer vintage pieces but if I were to go new, I could fill a box with these and be very happy.

Absolutely gorgeous watches... I know who I'm going to blame for going broke in 2020. :whipped:

I've been in "save up / take a breather mode" for the duration of the lockdown here in the US, since the 2447NT arrived just a couple days before it began.

Purchases # 10 and 11 during the lockdown alone should be arriving this week ::facepalm1::

(plus, two preorders will be along in November)
