Played My Drums Wearing My Aqua Terra... yeah, don't

Hey guys (and gals)

I was doing some recording this afternoon playing drums and I had my AT on (latest generation 8900 caliber) and when I stopped playing I realized I had the watch on.

Checked the time and realized the watch had jumped almost a minute and a half fast!!

This must be because of the force of hitting the drums/cymbals right? I reset the time and it seems to be running fine again....

I guess keep the pressure off folks! And unless you're Buddy Rich (or Phil Collins), don't wear expensive watches while drumming!

Ouch! Hopefully it's OK. I've played golf in mine without issue but that's nothing like the drums.

What an endorsement for Omega’s toughness!! On a serious note, have to the gun range many times with various Omegas (PO and Speedy)..............no problem.

Interesting, I play drums with auto watches with no issue. I don't have an AT though. I'm also not a hard hitting heavy metal drummer either (not that I'm saying you are). I wonder if you have an issue with your watch.

As a drummer you are the time-maker. Sounds like the beat was too fast, and the watch got caught up in it all and started following your pace.

Get a Speedy Pro. If it can handle 3 G's of takeoff pressure at launch and the violent buffeting that occurs upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere, I suspect that playing the drums won't be an issue.

its a good point, but one that seems to need constant reminder:

yes, Speedmasters “survived” space travel, but not without getting beat all to sh*t and needing repairs

There seems to sometimes be a misconception that Speedmasters were chosen because they still looked NOS and kept perfect time no matter what was thrown at them

Oh, I’m well aware of that and I agree, but the Speedy is nonetheless a very tough watch. As I recall, the hands on Rolex’s entry in the NASA competition actually melted during testing. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the Crown’s purported durability.

To be fair, Rolex submitted a watch made with Swiss chocolate...😜

If you shake a watch fast, it speeds up. I thought it was a product of the rotor going faster than intended. If so, wearing a Speedy would be better for the drums... maybe Archer can chime in if this phenomenon is specific to automatic watches.

Whatever it’s worth, I typically wear my Aquaracer (Calibre 5) to the gym. if I do battle ropes it’s not unusual for it to be a little fast, 20-30 seconds maybe, but certainly not entire minutes.

Are you saying that the damage occurred while the watch was being used on a mission?

Last summer I knocked an auto movement out of place on a benrus, it was either that or a Rado I can’t remember which. Usually I wear a vostok for such things but forgot to that day. I gotta get a g-shock for certain things

Well, Cernan’s watch has disputed source of all the aesthetic damage seen, as I believe he continued wearing it for years after the last mission.

But the photos were just visual candy/propaganda for the broader point “surviving” missions is not synonymous with prospering on missions 👍

why would a mechanism that winds a watch speed up the time keeping?
