I'm part of that statistic. A few years back, I got my feet tangle while back pedaling and twisting for an overhead shot. Fell back and put my right hand down to break the fall. Result: a hairline fracture of the radius. Took 3 weeks off and headed right back on the courts. It's a great sport.

Either you haven't played or don't play competitive matches. I grew up playing tennis and now mainly play pickle amongst racket sports. I play 2-3 times a week for around 2 hours straight, and am comfortably a 3.5+ player. Even in a competitive doubles match, there is a lot of sprinting and movement (certainly not as much as tennis but still a good work out), and singles is an even bigger workout. I can play matches with players who are 20-30 years younger than me on a competitive level with the smaller court size and the fact that pickle is not purely a power game. The pros typically play a dink focused game, but most players mix it up, which also contributes to the workout aspect. And it is really fun and social.

JMHO. See you on the courts!

I've never played padel ball, but a couple of years ago at Archer's suggestion I took up pickelball after breaking my foot and ankle. It's an easy, slow paced game, that's easy to pick up. My daughter will play it with me and not complain, she's thirteen, so that's pretty impressive. It hasn't gotten her interested in playing tennis though.

I'm in Sanibel, FL and pickelball is extremely popular. My wife and I played in our first tournament last Saturday. We had a great time. The younger folks were killing it (25 or so) and they dominated. I can't complain, we came in 5th. It's a great way to get in cardio.

Good lord!

They ripped the skate park where my kids used to ride and installed 8 pickleball courts.
Guess the area is getting older. I didn’t think it was THAT old tho.

Well, my club is encouraging some lateral thinking to boost take-up and sweat assets, but I'm just not sure I can suggest we root out ye olde courts 14-19 and put in some open water. For one thing, someone is bound to make cracks about padel and kayaking. Beautiful sport though (especially off the west of Ireland, imho).

That really is a harsh decision, and short-sighted: the younger generation may not forgive it in time to start looking after the councilmen or whoever responsible in their old age...

No to both, thank you. My gym:

Well, since I swim like a rock, I’ll stick to racquet sports...cannot drown on a tennis court! 😁

I'm not sure how you work up a sweat playing pickleball, much less injuring yourself.

Embarrassingly enough, I tore my calf muscle at a pickleball indoor clinic. In my defense, I had gone for a long run earlier in the day and was feeling a bit dehydrated in hindsight.

I’ll give you that one, but a sea kayak can take you places where a tennis court will never go. 😀

The beauty of pickleball is the fact that anyone can play it and be reasonably good with In your first 50 games. This brings people together. My 75 year old in laws can play with their kids and grand kids and everyone is competitive.

Well, that does happen, but not having the proper skills, kayaking alone in very cold water without the proper protective clothing and a personal locator beacon, failing to wear a personal flotation device, and exercising extremely poor judgment are usually all involved.

So, it is Ping Pong for older people..... Found that one :

Pickleball-related injuries occur most frequently in older people, according to a 2021 medical study. From 2010-2019, 86% of emergency department visits due to pickleball injuries occurred in people over 60 years old, according to the medical study. Around 60% of pickleball injuries are sprains, strains and fractures. Twenty percent are contusions, abrasions, or internal injuries; and fewer than 10% are lacerations or dislocations.

The analysts estimated that there will be around 67,000 emergency room visits, 366,000 outpatient visits and 9,000 outpatient surgeries related to pickleball injuries this year.

I guess that's what Archer was referring to up above - and I think it was the same researchers who discovered the majority of large steaming piles in the woods are probably bear-related...
I still haven't tried Pickleball myself yet, but I am starting to think it's not the best way to go if your club has the choice. I didn't start out wanting to diss any particular activity, just to find out some of the pros and cons, including what's unique or inspiring. I'm really not getting much of the latter though. I'll admit the Padel supporters' strategy of not taking the witness stand is starting to pay off, and I'm getting a touch of confirmation bias.

For example, I saw some video on YT the other day of an exo being played by Agassi/Roddick vs McEnroe/Chang (footnote - retired tennis pros). None of them looked in very impressive shape, so perhaps quite useful for this purpose as representative of highly competent but non-specialist players past their athletic prime. Even though they were having a fun match on TV, frankly to my eye they looked simultaneously both exhausted and yet bored, cracking a smile only when Steffi Graf (Agassi's better half) strode on for a minute and outplayed them all.

Research continues - after Wimbledon.
