Oyster Perpetual 39, worth it?

    Hi there,
As we need to keep some goal in mind, my next modern watch could be a Rolex.
First, I thought of a datejust 36mm with fluted bezel, I tried it on, but surprisingly it did not work as well as I was expected! 41mm date just is too big, 36mm is maybe a bit too small (even if I’m use to wear my 168.005 which I love). Maybe I should go for a second try!

Then, I’ve started looking for an Oyster perpetual 39mm with white dial but the AD did not have one in stock. I like the dial, the brush bracelet, and I guess the 39mm could be perfect!

As we don’t see this model so often, I was wondering: is this Rolex worth it regarding the mouvement and caracteristics? Does anyone has feedbacks on this white « polar » dial?

    Thanks :)

So that’s the 36 on your wrist in the pic? I say 36 Datejust all the way. It’s classic. 39 OP is great, nice and clean, maybe a bit more casual. So really comes down to determining if you want a date feature, and vintage size/styling.

I agree. The 36 mm looks great in the pic: classic.

I also prefer having date on my watch. <braces for blow-back from all the non-date purists>

it’s funny, I was all about having a date feature for the longest time. Had passionate conversations with fellow watch friends about why you needed a date. But more and more I understand the no date love on the vintage side, specially with screw down crowns, and a larger collection the need to unscrew, reset the date, with no quickset feature, the extra wear and tear possibilities, all of that. But I will say, having the date sure is convenient...

Oh, and talk about bracing for blow-back... I absolutely LOVE the cyclops on my Rolex...!

Yes, picture is from the 36. 41 was definitely too big.
Thought I would be in love with the bezel, but found it so shiny! The same one with flat bezel was a good surprise on the wrist.

Apart from the date fonction, is there some mains difference between the DJ and the OP? Does both mouvement worth it?
I like the white dial of the OP, found it

I’m not sure I need the date, not so fan of the cyclop

I would go with the OP. I'm not a fan of the fluted bezel and really like the clean look of a no-date. I own 2 Rolex, both are no-dates, so I'm a little biased.

I went for the OP39. The white is mesmorizing. Only downsides:
    1. I stare at it for the beauty and forget to see what time it is.
    2. I cannot wear other watches for very long. Like 15 minutes long.

This was my first Rolex.I wanted an under the radar watch that wasn't blingy or like everyone else's Submariner. I also have many nice dive watches so an everyday to work and dress was wanted. The Explorer was my first choice but honestly the numbers look cartoonishly too large, and the Mercedes hands never did much for me. The OP39 has great symmetry, awesome indices and nice hands. It has been perfect and worn daily for the month I've had it.

My only hard choice here was black or white dial.

I do too. It's not for every watch, but a cyclops and fluted bezel have a very specific appeal, at least to me lately.

I really like the OP39. Super clean design, beautiful case and dial, good wrist presence without too much bling. My fave of the current Rolex offerings other than the Sub.

Great to have feedbacks from an owner :)
I can’t fin the length from lug to lug on the 39mm version, any idea?

Is the white dial totally mate or shiny?

I recently picked up an OP 39 in white after spending a lot of time deliberating on which size to go for. The 36mm OP is probably the best sized case but the dial is too busy for me. It has double batons at 3,6 and 9 and 10,20,30, etc around the outside of the dial. The 36mm is the only sized OP to have this dial configuration which I think ruins the simplicity of the watch.

After 3 or 4 weeks of wearing the OP 39 I am really happy with it. It does not wear overly big at all when compared with the other watches I have, 69 Speedmaster and Submariner 14060m. It is a great contrast to what I already have.

The dial is not shiny in my eyes but the colour does transition from a pretty bright matt white in natural light to almost a silver under artificial lighting.

I had some difficulty finding a white dial 39 in an AD in the UK but was lucky enough to pick one up privately.

P.S. The polished bezel is a scratch magnet but that doesn't bother me.

    It’s a beauty!
What about the glass? If i’m right, it is flat and without anti reflection, am I right?
Does it bore you when watching it?

Yes, the crystal is flat, raised slightly above the bezel without any anti reflection. I don't think any Rolex watches have anti reflection.

The watch is definitely plain and simple but I really like it. Its a stark contrast to a Speedmaster and Sub so its been a great addition for me.

Yes, it seems to be a “goes with everything” watch, and this is what I like.
Owning a black bay and a vintage 168.005, it would be perfect to complete the set! :)
Just need to save money first..!

That is very nice - clean strong lines without the 'look at me' overtones of the sports watches (with the possible exception of the latest Submariner without date, which I like for its similar clean lines).

The dial is a white matte finish. Size lug to lug is 47.4mm, but if you include the little beak of the bracelet solid end link middle, it is 49mm.

Thanks for the lug to lug size, I definitely need to try it on.
To compare, does someone knows the lug to lug distance on the 36 version?
Black dial could be also an option, even if at first sight I prefer way much the white dial.
The black one seems to me more shiny than mate, right?

OP39 white is a popular choice for many.
