other forum project watch

Thought I'd share my experience over time having signed up to a project watch on another forum. Basically I'm already regretting straying from the oasis of calm that is omega forums.

The 'project' is undefined at the moment, other than coming from a german watchmaker mostly well known for well priced homage watches - there are 111 people currently on the list for a watch and a waiting list. There's been one vote so far, which was fairly painless and was for a homage vs original design - the group voted something like 82% for original. Everything else remains to be discussed and voted on.

The guys running the project seem to know what they are doing and seem switched on and organised. however, things have strayed from my expectations with the second vote, which is for budget. There are four categories, from modest (up to 500 euros) to unlimited (over 1000 euros), and out of 200 posts discussing it, 40% have come from two individuals relentlessly presenting their case for an unlimited budget on the basis that this will not exclude any design choices they may want to make and they frequently suggest that if they have to go over budget by a mere 2-300 euros this lets them do so.

When the number of posts they had made was pointed out to them their response was 'yeah, and I'm proud of that'...

If I look ahead to two years of discussions where these guys drive to get 'their' decisions for 'their' watch, I just immediately feel exhausted. Anyone done a project watch before, is this typical? Right now I'm thinking about withdrawing....

I would slink into the background and let the two take over or make a decision by numbers not email traffic and stick to it you might even loose the annoying two 馃槜

I run a fishing comp and had that same issue with rules, where to fish, points, how many to let in, prizes and date of the comp . Learnt after the first few years is if its a vote two choices only and the less you let the entrants know the easier it goes. Same 3 or 4 had more to say than 80 others.
( not that date, better prizes and less entry fee ? WTF how does that work) Had to hold it in a dam one year after a few ( including two of the 4 mentioned) fished outside the boundaries the year before and caused 60 emails a day for weeks dealing with all the protests.
These days its, This Day This Place all picked by me and the dog..

Once you have more than one person you will never make everyone happy.

I have wondered how those project watches get made. Thanks for the post, I would not get involved now.

I have been on the other side of the bench on one of these things - never did end up going forward as no one could agree and it was sucking up so much of my time...

"Trying to herd cats" is the phrase that comes to mind with these projects.

I have been reading into this project after your post here. Hell, if they are discussing the topic of cost at this length, what will happen as soon as the details of the watch are on topic?: Dial colour? Do you want it to be white, grey, black, yellow, orange, red, brown etc. The choices could be endless!

On the other hand: Imagining an "OF-Project-Watch", it would be of interest to be part of it.

On the Polish watch forums, rather we do not have a problem with that. Of course there are debates and election / vote for eg. the crown or hands but projects are always completed. I feel sorry for the adults people can not communicate.

Apparently the camel was a horse designed by a committee.

Apparently the Invicta was a watch designed by a committee.

There, fixed it for you.

I have been involved in similar projects for a different brand. There was bickering, accusations and quite a bit of disagreement.

However, the end product has always been good.

What you need is strong leadership from the admins and mods.

Either ask people to submit designs or have a design team that will submit their prospective models. I have been involved in both.

I made a design that won the numerous votes and 'my' watch will now be produced. That is quite a satisfying feeling! It should be here in 2015 all being well.

Haha - yes, a fair point.

The final model will have MMXV rather than slimiline on the dial - 40mm. Applied rose gold markers, museum grade crystal with a ETA 2801-2.

Nice looking , reminds me some of Nomos.
