Hi. I got this Seamaster Calender from 1954. Casenumber is 2849-3 sc. When i got it it had an old flexiband that was falling apart. I changed it to a cheap generic strap but i would like to try to hunt down something as close as possible to the original strap and buckle that this watch came with back in 1954. I have tried to search for pictures of old advertisements but cant find anything.

Does anyone know what type of strap and buckle these watches came with when they were purchased new?

Best Regards
GulDan

The 2849 was launched in 1956 AFAIK. Just saying!

Period advertising is useful for this. Yours might have had some sort of glossy crocodile strap like this:

Earlier versions had straps like this:

Hah I have one of those grey straps like on the 2627. Too bad it's a short. If you have a 6.5" wrist, it's perfect. 😁

Thanks for all the info!

Interesting about the year. The serial starts with 1489 and from what i can find that should date it to 1954?
is it not a 2849-3 sc?

The 500 series movements were rolled out in 1955, the 2849 calendar SM model following a year later. I had a 14.38m and also a 15.0m Omega both hallmarked for 1956 so I would say yours is an early 2849 from 1956 ie there is no discrepancy. I assume you've checked the inner caseback for the model number, the difference between iterations on the 50s models is not well documented and it seems different dials were used on the same iterations so the picture isn't clear. I wouldn't try to guess at the iteration based solely on the dial and case on a 50s model.

Much like this one:
In case you haven't noticed that the strap you show here is the one in the second advert posted by Vitezi above so is presumably original.

I did but he has date at three, not six, so would not the croc be more likely?

I don’t think it worked like that then, there was likely a pool of straps for a given model so I think yours looks perfectly correct and original for any mid-late 50s calendar.

You’re as likely right as anyone and it could have varied from one country to the next as well. For example, I have an ad for a watch like his... on a bracelet!

I do like the old ads and catalog pics on Omega’s vintage database because you can at least get a sense of the style of strap. Too bad most of them are not made that way today!
