I had the "pleasure" to see other straight lugged Speedies twice at Meertz earlier this year..besides the misleading description, high asking price and the unattractiveness of the watches in the flesh, I was actually the one who had to point out the flaws ( modern bezel on one, SL Hands on the other, both clearly visible but not disclosed in the listing ) and talk about the watches while the sales person obviously had either no idea or didn't feel obliged to do so. In short, me being customer, I actually presented the watches to the sales person, with very little feedback by the way..a quite ridiculous situation. Buy the seller.

Besides that, all about the watch itself here has been said.

I don't know who gave service to you there, but I have had more than a couple deals with Ralf who owns that shop. Although our last transaction was a little bit unpleasant, it had nothing to do with his lack of knowledge or any mispresentation, it was rather because of different perspective over a certain detail. He has a very large inventory (i.e. many brands many models = hundreds of different watches and they are all valuable) so I can't say he is an expert of each one, but I can vouch for his knowledge in popular big brands and Omega is certainly one of them. He is not just a guy who happens to get in vintage watch trading and make a quick pfofit. Just felt your post is a bit unfair to Meertz. In any case, whether you're buying off the bay or from a high end vintage shop, you always need to have done your own study, AND remember, always negotiate for the price.

Personally, i like the dial of the original post. It's battered but appealing to me!! It has a different feel compared to a black dial. Love it but price is an issue.

Whoever presented the watches to me, it was not Ralf then. Maybe it was due to the fact that I don't look like their regular customers, but the watch I wore that day should have been a hint that I certainly am 😀
Anyway, a very dissapointing Experience, Ralf might then need to talk to his employees about this. Seriously.

be patient there out there this was a pickup over 3 weeks and was 13k cheaper than that (don and bracelet added later) and had £900 spent on it the month before by the seller servicing it at omega
The fact that you got a deal on an EW doesn't mean that anyone can.

I agree but with a bit of patience and looking around the net you might be able to snag one.

The one ive posted from facebook which is for sale with the right parts it can be a nice Ed White

Operating lever spring is broken, but that one is easily replaced. So yes it's sort of a mini version of paperclip gate. The one on here had more problems than just the paperclip, and the parts that were missing were not as easily replaced.

Don't know if this place sells the watches as serviced, but if so this is pretty poor work...

from the web site

In our own highly specialized and well equipped workshop, we offer a comprehensive service. Here valuable mechanical watches are repaired and restored by the master watchmakers

Sure, they offer services, but it doesn't indicate that this one has been serviced, unless I missed it in the listing...

Pretty sure most people will take the claim of a service with a large grain of salt, and for me personally I take a "dealer service" with a large bucket of salt. I have seen so much bad service work done on watches from vintage "dealers" that I would pretty much discount that a service was done entirely. On these watches adding in a service is not a huge thing when compared to the price of the watch, and the missing part is $52.

Not excusing the fact they didn't repair this or disclose it directly at all - just saying this is not as big a deal as the incident you are referring to was.

Cheers, Al

Best advice to OP is to keep your eye on the Private Sales section of this Forum. You'll do a lot better than any of these dealer prepared watches and can always get most of your money back if you ever decide to sell yourself. A good number of reasonably priced straight lug Speedmasters have appeared in recent weeks. Good luck!

In fact, there's at least one such for sale here right now... for a good bit less too.
