Hi guys, Not sure how many GRUEN specialists are here but I thougt this might be interesting anyway. What do you think about this Vintage GRUEN 21 PRECISION? It running for 90USD... I m waiting for a pic of the inner back case from the Seller. I suspect though it is a Cal. 335 movement from 1948. Any opinion would be great. Thanks in advance. Cheers, WATCHROCK
Love Gruen. Their Precision movements were their top line assembled by their best WM 90US is fantastic Make sure you like smaller watches the "21" is there just hidden.
Okay thanks hehe - the movement seems in good health. Found out by checking the caseback number that this model is from the early 1950s (1952/53). I might just check some more sources and then see what I will do - I certainly like the shape. Other inputs also appreciated but seems the GRUEN fan are still hiding from this post lols.
Mea culpa - I lurk on the forums more specific to Omega watches - and Open topics. That Gruen is really cool! I’ve not seen one like that before. I’m no Gruen specialist, yet here is a favourite watch of mine; a Precision that belonged to my late father. His daily driver when I was very young, the watch languished with a cracked crystal in a drawer for 40+ years. In 2014 I took it to my watchmaker for a service (the crown was toast, sadly). I could perhaps get $125 for it. To me, however, it’s worth many times that amount. Enjoy yours. The company has an interesting history, albeit sad by the end.
Did you end up purchasing the watch? I just picked up my first Gruen at an antique sale on the weekend (pics when it is back from the watchmaker). I have been researching madly, and found that Precision and Veri-thin are two trademarks from Gruen for their different lines. A precision watch likely would not have a veri-thin movement, as your photos show (see http://vintagewatchforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=12845). Movements for some would fit in others, but the Precision line would carry a higher price tag ($31 new vs $51 new for a precision). Either way, great looking watch
My only Ebay wat h purchase was a Gruen Precision. Some seller pics (was without a crystal, which I’ve since had installed during a service):
I'm a big fan of Gruen watches, and have owned a few Precision pieces. This is a great price at 90 USD. I wonder about the 'diamonds' on the dial though, if they are original to the watch?
I'm of the opinion that Gruen once offered one of the truly useful complications. Shame it never became mainstream See https://omegaforums.net/threads/new-addition-gruen-airflight-i.8549/
