The Oyster doesn’t have a story. The Speedy does.

I’d buy the speedy, and get a seiko diver like the SKX to go fishing or to the beach.

honesty you would not want the Oyster out on a fishing boat.

This may get me tossed out of here but "one watch" as you described sounds like a Rolex Sub to me 🤦

Meh! How do you time car rally sections in seconds with a Sub?

That's the reason I started with a Heuer. Never have dived, except in the local swimming baths learning life-saving. Never needed to use that qualification in anger.

Nothing beats a well worn Speedmaster.
6 years of worn every day to work.

Maybe you should ask the same question over at Rolexforums. ::stirthepot::

When I take a look at the Speedmaster, space travel doesn’t enter my mind. Omega does have an interesting history compared to the Rolex. Plus the patina or not you can have with an Omega. Rolex Perpetual little more plain, but Ok.
Like Omega for the bigger case. 36mm getting down to the minimum of what I would like. Try them both before buying.

No one can decide apart from you.

Personally, if you'd asked me a year ago, I'd have said a Speedmaster, no question. Recently I've been warming to some Rolex models, and the white or black dial OPs are excellent 'one' watches.

Don't rule out the 39mm Explorer though. I've just picked one up and feel it wears the same as a Speedmaster Pro.

Looked at them. Loved them. Aesthetically, it rivals the speedmaster as best looking. And it has the story to boot. Three things hold me back: 1.) The price. 2.) It may be a bit more recognizable than what I am looking for. 3.) The price.

Might be my replacement for the Speedy/OP in 20-30 years though.

Now a Rolex Sub is a horse of different color compared to the Perpetual. There is a coin flip between a Sub and Speedmaster.

The big question is have you physically tried these on in the shop? I have had watch lust for certain models then tried them on and felt- meh-about them....it’s even worse when you shell out $2,4,6k for one and realize it after the fact.

Maybe the best advise yet!
I can't believe that no one has mentioned a 2254.50. Maybe the best for the bucks all time?

I like your plan. Get a watch wear it everyday and hand it off to the kid at the proper time. Get another one... Question: having researched the matter, having read these responses thus far, can you do it?
Can you limit it to one now one then? Good luck. All the best. Lucky kid.
Have fun

I have. Should have mentioned that. I like them both for different reasons.

The Speedmaster is more interesting - I feel that I would never tire of looking at it. And it fits well.
The OP is definitely smaller and different from everything I've had and would take a bit of getting use to, but in time I think I would really like it.

I feel like the OP is the type of watch that your appreciation grows with over time, whereas the Speedmaster is captivating from the start.

They are like chips, man- you really can’t just have one. To watch guys like us, it’s like saying you only need one pair of shoes for everything in life.

Your watch doesn't have to have a story. You should be the one writing the story for the watch.
I'd get the OP. If it's the only watch I'd need a date function. Plus it's got better water resistance. And I personally think 36mm sizing is more classic. That's just me though.
Or you can get one now and save up for the other one later. I feel like those two compliment either other fairly well.

Ha! Thankfully my shoes cost less than an Omega/Rolex!

This could be an option. As romantic as the idea of having one watch is, if I have a second kid....

I suppose I would have to be fair.
