I bought my Ball watch from them. No issues. Came in a nice orange watch roll.

Swiss watch expo is another option, I purchased my Seamaster Agua Terra GMT from them a few years ago. A very smooth and friendly transaction.

Bought my Seamaster 300 from them. Great experience and the watch was exactly as advertised. They are legit. But, if you are interested in a watch and they have lots in stock, be patient because they do lower prices over time to keep stock moving. My Seamaster 300 dropped by nearly $1500 over four months before I grabbed it.

I had a very good experience buying a Speedmaster 3590.50 from them. Price was reasonable and the watch was exactly as described and in very nice condition. No complaints.

I will say, I was all about Bob's watches until yesterday. Been watching an Oris Audi GMT they've been selling for $1395 for like 6 months or so. Black Friday they had a sale for $50 but I was buying other things here instead. Come yesterday, I get an email that all Oris watches are 10% off. I'm like, cool, now is my time to strike on a great deal. So I refresh the perpetual tab I have open on it ... wouldn't you know the fuckers raised the base price to $1495! A full $100 increase. So instead of the $1255.50 it should have been, now it's only $40 off the original price, at $1345 after the 10%.

fυck that, I deleted the tab and I'll never buy from them.

Yes, I believe the two organizations "merged" a while back.

Has anyone had experience with returning a watched purchased from Crown & Caliber?

Yes, the merged together.

Review the return guidelines and don’t take the security seal/tape off and you should be fine. I have had to return a watch with them after the security tape was removed and it was fine but it was a special circumstance.

Two years ago, I bought a new SMP300 from c&c (no box/papers) and it was “fine” when it arrived and I opened the box. I liked it and removed the security tape. However, the very next day there was a defect with the watch that caused it to stop working and I returned it for them to service it under their warranty, which was my only option. Two months later, I received the watch back and it was worse than the first time around. The crystal was for some reason removed and when it was re-pressed back in, it was crooked and one side was significantly higher than the other side- instead of being flush with the bezel. There were also a number of scratches in the AR coating on the under side of the crystal. The seconds hand was also bent upwards and dragging against the inside of the crystal. So despite having removed the security seal and it being two months after the purchase date, I was able to return the watch successfully for a full refund. I won’t be buying a watch from them again.

I recall seeing posts highlighting Hodinkee watchmaker job openings with vey low salary ranges, so it’s unfortunately unsurprising that the “service” your watch received was so terrible.

Agreed. I should also add that this happened just before I had joined OF and I have since learned a lot.

There are sweat shops in usually the basement levels of buildings in the 47th st jewelry district where most of the slam-bang quick fixes are done to watches, and given Hodinkee's relationship with those dealers in that district I would imagine that's where most of their work is done.

This brings up an important point about these watch resellers. I always ignore their “warranty” for these watches. I buy assuming that if something goes wrong with the watch and it doesn’t have a valid manufacturer warranty, I will send it to the watchmaker of my choice, not the seller for repair.

it’s the same with buying a used car. If something g goes wrong with the car after I’ve purchased and it doesn’t have a manufacturer’s warranty, I’m taking it to the mechanic I’ve been using for a decade, not the mechanic the car lot uses.

Yes. They are excellent. I've purchased watches from Bob's, Swiss Watch Expo, C&C, and Watchbox (among others). C&C is probably the easiest to do returns with.

I'm pretty picky about buying preowned watches and I sent a couple back to C&C. I was little nervous about it so I mentioned to the person I called to initiate the return that I hoped I wouldn't be put on a "do not sell list" or something like that. She giggled and said it wasn't a problem. If I wasn't happy, they would take the watch back no problem (I had not removed the tape).

BTW - I sent them back because the models didn't work for me (too thick, not legible enough, etc.) not because they sent me a defective watch.

Did you keep any of them from Crown and Caliber? If so I’m just curious for you- or any of those replied, what “sold” you on the authenticity of your purchase? Is is from experience that you felt comfortable or based on any other factor?

Not surprised but argh.

I purchased a watch directly from Hondinkee a while back that was pretty clearly a used watch / return that wasn't labelled as such. I suspect that they threw it in a shipping box without checking its condition and minus any packaging materials and it arrived in pretty rough shape.

It is now an open case with my CC provider. Pretty unpleasant all round, but I have had nothing but good experiences with C&C in the past.

Has anyone had experience with returning a watched purchased from Crown & Caliber?

Another +1 on positive experiences with C&C, both before and after they were acquired by Hodinkee. Have bought several watches from them, and always exactly as advertised. Had one scenario requiring a return. They made it easy and stood by their policies.

Relatedly, had some bad luck with a Speedy I bought new from Hodinkee in their capacity as an AD. The Speedy had issues, but Hodinkee was absolute first rate customer service in taking the watch back without any issue or hassle. A+ service.
