I have the opportunity to purchase a Seamaster 166.026 for $550.

From the seller:
"It has the Caliber 565 which is an automatic movement . Watch is serviced in 09.2022 and it holds time perfect

Condition is used, . crown is signed with omega logo. There are normal signs of use on glass, case. watch is unpolished with nice sharp edges. IMPORTANT: there are some marks on dial (left from 12 marker and center of dial)

There is hand wind option and also quick set for date (when you pull out crown in 3th position, on 2 you set time)."

Any thoughts?

What do you seek?

What are your thoughts after researching a potential purchase?

I am looking for my first vintage Omega, so a reasonable price point for something that will last me for a while before needing to be serviced would be perfect.

Well, OK, then.

One point I can help with........do not believe any seller who states the watch has been serviced unless he has the written receipt with a phone number you can call to verify all the "seller-speak" in their advertisement.

AND...........then hope the WM is an actual WM and one with great skills and integrity.

Most collectors here ignore seller-speak and have their own WM service any purchases if to be worn daily.

Good luck

Meh, I was going to post some kind of a Monty Python "Quest for the Holy Grail" meme....

but, just mentioning it might be funnier than what I could muster....

So, enjoy....

Am I crazy or are those hands (maybe it's just the odd shifting shadow/glare) and crown wrong?

Personally, I think it’s a nice looking watch at a good price in today’s market and I’d buy it if it were in the UK.

Welcome @scientifics

The cosmc’s are nice watches- same high quality moments as other omegas of the time but the cases and dials were a little more fun for the time. As said above- unless the seller has documentation of an actually tear-down service, I would be skeptical. “We have a guy” is not a watchmaker.
The watch looks nice, $550 isn’t a bad price for a nice Omega but do look closely at the dial as it has marks from a previously careless service

Some people may not mind it, it would drive me nuts to have these scratches and even at $200 I wouldn’t want to see that.

Price seems a bit high considering the overall condition of the dial. Note the scratch above the hands in the center, possible scratch below COSMIC in the last photo, loss of paint in the minute hand, looks like a split/crack in the crystal at 6 o'clock.

Really need a movement shot too.

Do an eBay search for SOLD watches, "Seamaster Cosmic".

Meh. Very common watch with its most common dial variant in average condition as the dial damage is an issue.

Given these can be found with dials that are a) less common, and b) in pretty much perfect condition, I’d pass on this one. Don’t let the service blind you.

Yep with that large dial damage at 11:00 it's a pass. That ain't no tropical aging, that's human damage. Unless you have a major hankering for a cosmic, you might want to check out the sales section on this site. Better stuff to be had and a more trustworthy venue.

Not the best, but not hideous. In my (recent) experience with these, the asking price is a little ambitious, but not a crazy place from which to start negotiations.

There are a lot of these around, and many many dial variants, so you might want to spend a little more time looking at what’s available.

No doubt at all that Cosmics are fun wearable watches.
