My local AD said he would put me on the waitlist with a $500.00 deposit. Is this something you guys would do or would you wait til the watch is readily available and (possible) discount is offered?
If you don’t live in proximity to an OB, who will surely get these watches first, I’d wait this out until stock starts trickling into your AD. You have to consider if this watch is really worth extending an interest free loan to an AD whom I assume gave you no timeline for delivery.
I will advice to wait. No need to rush to deposit your money. I am prety sure your watch will be avaiable..it's not something that will be sold in a few minutes from the release.
I guess it depends on how much you need that $500 over the next few months to a year for the watch to actually make it to dealers. If you don’t mind having it held at the AD not generating any interest for you and don’t need it for other expenses, then sure — you’ll more likely be able to get one of the earliest ones. Just get something in writing, especially about getting a refund if there is a substantial delay.
I suspect there will be plenty of people willing to pay that deposit for a reservation — that means they will get their watch before you.
Personally, I wouldn’t do it because nothing excites me that much about he new watch or technology. My co-axial watch gets better than their reported accuracy anyway. And I like the looks of other Speedmasters.
500 clams isn't much, but having gone through two Omega waitlists of several years and several months now, I won't do it again. In both cases anticipation turned to frustration -- just isn't how I prefer to purchase watches, especially with no timeline for delivery.
