Omega Speedmaster stepped dial?

Hi all,

I am considering going to an auction for an Omega Speedmaster 145.022 69ST. I have not yet seen the watch as viewing days are prohibited due to the COVID situation in my country. So, until the auction day, I have to base my judgement on the listed pictures.

What concerns me about this watch is the dial. A 145.022 68ST Speedmaster should have a stepped dial. However, I am not sure whether this watch has had a replacement in the past. I know that the step can be difficult to identify, as the later dials can show a pronounced change in plane. Therefore, I am wondering whether a more experienced eye sees a clear step in these pictures.

Also, if you find something else suspicious about this watch, I would be very thankful if you could share this with me. This would be my first expensive watch purchase, so I find it a little exciting.

Many thanks

The last dial photo, the one taken from the left, clearly shows a step. The other photos are tough to tell anything, but that one is pretty definitive.

In the last dial picture it does look stepped.

Edit: I see blacktalon and I were typing at the same time 😁

Thanks Blacktalon and Janice&Fred! I thought it was really difficult to assess, great you shared your knowledge with me. In my opinion, the watch looks unpolished, and I love the 1039 bracelet. What is the maximum price that I should offer? I was thinking 5-6k.

With the bracelet I think you will need to be in that range.

Thank you for sending me this link! Very informative data. I might want to consider lowering my maximum offer.

The Speedmaster101 prices are watch head only. You need to add in the value of the bracelet and end links, which is >$1,000

Ah heads only, that makes sense. Hard to tell what the condition of the watch is.. I would assess it as "good", so my maximum should be approximately $5500 (=€4500). Do you agree?

If you, or anyone else, know(s) anyone in Europe who is happy to sell a good/very good/excellent pre-moon, I would be happy to get in touch with this person. Also earlier versions with applied logo (which I actually like more) are welcome. I prefer the (various) flat-link bracelets that are correct to the watch.

Thanks

I would want to see photos that are not overexposed like these in order to judge better what it may be worth. I would especially want a photo of the dial taken straight on, and some taken directly from the sides to better see the brushing (and if it looks newly applied as part of a case 'refinish' done as prep for the sale). The caseback is a bit worn/ polished, and the lines on the midcase between pushers look like there may be some odd/ poor polishing. My feeling at this point is between fair and good, plus another $1,200 for the bracelet and end links, but I personally would not be able to decide how high to bid based on these photos.

I hardly doubt that you would be able to find a 145012 at that price (4500 EUR). Speedmaster 101 says appzx. 9000 Usd for a piece in good condition (head only), and I think that reflect the price level very well.

Thank you for your assessment. I will reconsider whether I am going to bid on this watch. Thanks.

Thank you for your comment. I mentioned this price for the watch in the pictures I posted. I am aware that a different price range applies to the 145.012.

Thanks! I hope to find one on this forum if the auction does not work out. So I will check the sales category regularly 😀.

Watch has been sold for EUR 6.3k / USD 7.6k. I have chosen not to bid on this watch. Many thanks for the advice anyways!

It looks stepped to me. If you're unsure, I'd look at Speedmaster101.com for more info on stepped dials, or email the auction house for clearer photos.
