Hi all,

I'm looking at options to purchase an Omega Speedmaster Mark ii.

I kinda like the look or the speedmaster mark ii rio edition, but I often see some vintage mark ii on the market that might be worth exploring.

As I'm fairly new to world of these timepieces it would be nice to hear some thoughts on what OF members have on these watches?

Those two watches are estheticly and technically hard to compare, so it comes down to personal preference. However, if you are not drawn especially to the vintage pieces for specific reasons, you might be better off with a new one.

I have both colors of the vintage mark ii and have worn the reissue in an OB. In addition to what was said above, the reissue has a date complication and a more solid bracelet. The sunburst pattern on the case is also prone to scratches. If you want a “perfect” watch the reissue may be the way to go if those things are important to you.

Thanks both, for the advice. For sure, they are different aesthetically but both look good!! Which is why I've been unsure.

But listening to both your reasoning, having a watch I can enjoy wearing without having to worry about any immediate servicing might be the sensible also. I didnt take into consideration the Sunburst pattern can be prone to scratch more easily...

keep in mind the day-to-day of owning and wearing. A new piece will have loads better water resistance, shock resistance, etc.
Unless the allure is only for vintage, go new/recent.

Later on when you've learned more and maybe have a trusted dealer, go for a vintage piece. Too easy to get fleeced or end up with an unexpected hefty service bill on an older model.
