Hi Forum Friends!

The weather here in Sweden is dark and grey…and cold...

So why not another (never ending) auction report on Speedys.
😃

This one appeared a while ago, and the pictures showed a very promising watch.
The auction house was not so skilled regarding watches, and did not have much info (to start with).
There were only a few pictures, no info regarding the reference, and a silly low estimate.

Looking at the pictures (the first 3), the facet lines showed that it was a 105.012-66 CB - YAY ::psy::!
I think we can agree that nice conditioned Speedys with a 321 movement are getting harder and harder to find (on auctions)?

Since the auction was on a few platsforms, it got lots of attention!
And lots of people with lots of questions…

The auction house finally understood that they had to take more pictures, and also more info.
I think that they changed the description 2-3 times, with more and more info, and extra pictures every time.

They even opened up the watch, and showed the movement, and the reference.
A funny thing - the one who opened the watch got an sticky surprise…😬

With a new bunch of pictures, it was time to assess the watch.
And the lume on the dial was the part that needed to be studied....
All of them had discoloration, some more, some less.
It did not actually look weird, the watch had a nice vibe, and looked very honest and pleasing.

It had a service crown, which could be changed to a correct one when serviced.
The bracelet was a 1035, with nr 16 and nr 516 endlinks.

I had to find out about the condition of the dial.
I did zoom in and tried to process the pictures, and I found some weird marks close to the lume.

Something had moved from the lume on to the dial, and it did not look so nice….
And this made hesitate, and I finally skipped on the watch.

I did follow the auction (of course…)!

The lot came up and the auction started, there were lots and lots of bids, and the hammer finally fell on ????

The watch was going to US and A, so maybe a Forum member got it?

But this time - why not let the Forum assess the watch, and also guess what the watch was sold for?
We all need to use them grey brain cells….
Those who did follow the auction - please do not reveal the price?

Have Fun!

Thanks for sharing this. Funny to see that someone auctioning the watch not even taking a minute to clean his hands or the bracelet. For how much did it go?

Aside from the lume that is starting to blacken in some places it looks like it is in great shape with what looks like a 1035 bracelet in great condition. I wonder how much a watch like this goes for these days. A few years ago it would have sold for $8K or $9k

I wouldn’t be surprised if it sold in that range right now. These CBs always seem to do well and get snapped up quickly.

I own one myself but mine is nowhere close to this condition. Mine has the "been there done that look" that does not make me think twice about wearing it lest i damage it 😀

Dial prob ok under the scratched plexiglass, with moldy lume edges. Lume present
Handset hood
Bezel good- just few dings
Case few dings but CB facet lines intact
Caseback good
Movement good with SN in range
Black goop from disintegrated Caseback gasket prob not serviced in decades. Can’t see watchmaker scratches.
To me if lume were not moldy would be good+
But with lume condition I would say good -
Bracelet with 16 EN good. I didn’t count to see if full but looks close.

So value to me would be 6400 head + 1500 bracelet value = 7900 USD round up to 8000
And might consider relume depending how I felt wearing it a bit.

I'd say this is a very solid assessment of the piece in question. Looking at the parts individually, this is a very nice watch. Let's not forget it has the correct fat neck pushers too. Those aren't easy to source when missing and the service ones do not look nearly as good (imho).
However, it's a pity the quality of the lume is letting it down. Even more so as some CB's feature lovely, pumpkin coloured, plots.

(As I followed the auction, I will not comment on the actual price it fetched)

It has value as parts, but overall it is unattractive, both the moldy lume and mismatched bracelet. Someone with a ton of extra parts and pieces could make good use of it.

Watching with interest because I would love to have a birth year 105.012 and 66 is it. But unless a miracle happens I will have to be satisfied with my collection of current 3861s.

Very unlikely that this is a 1966 watch, IMO.

I have a feeling they sometimes do not clean the watch to give it that "barn find" look 😉😉

This assessment is really spot on!

The lume does not have any flaking, and the dial looks clean.
Closed T´s on the dial, so an early CB.
A bit sad that the mold/discoloration has spread to the dial....

The bezel has the thin fonts that are desirable.
And the correct pushers.

The watch has been with a watchmaker, and they replaced the crown.
There are a few dents/dings, and some of them have been ”cloth” polished.

And the bracelet is not for this reference, the watchmaker might have looked in his box, and took what he found?
One nr 16 endlink, one nr 516 endlink…and Hey - we can take this bracelet...😁
But it has value.

I did find a sale here in the Forum, and the dial had similar lume.
That watch looked lovely!

It is only when you look at pictures, and zoom in that the lume becomes disturbing.

I think that a complete service and cleaning, a polish to the crystal, a flatfoot crown and a new strap would do miracles to the watch.
The crystal could be original, but impossible to see the logo..

And I think thats how the buyer (and bidders) thought?

I will wait some more before reveling the price, and maybe a few more Speedyguys will help out with the assessment and guessing?

Stay Frosty Gents!

CB´s do not come up so often, and when they do - people often battle over them!
