Omega SMP300 2531.80 Dial Authentication

Hi folks!
I recently bought this 2531.80, and the dial is kinda baffling me, so I need your help. The case, movement, and the cards look correct to me, but the dial is kinda off. I hope that someone can shed some light for me. Thank you!

UPDATED: After a lot of information was shared. It looks like this is a serious frankenwatch with a genuine movement (serial number 81055378) and papers. Please be aware if you find this serial number online.

Why do you think the dial looks off?

What definitely looks off to me is the lume pip. I'm not sure if the bezel is aftermarket or if someone has sanded the pip flat and refilled it.

I can see how the less than razor sharp edges to the lume plots might cause you some puzzlement: any kind of back story available from the vendor possibly?

Dial printing definitely looks bad. I didn't think there was much of a market for fake dials for these though, but if it isn't fake, it's definitely poor quality control. The raised waves look a bit strange to me too, they look too prominent to me, which may be what is causing the printing to look jagged. But yours is newer judging by the globe authenticity thing on your caseback, which mine being a 1998 model doesn't have. So that could just be a dial revision and just a bad printing.

Here is my dial printing at 3.5x mag for reference.

The bezel insert is definitely aftermarket. Lume pip looks bad as you mentioned but is also off centre and all of the numerals are slightly too close to the outer edge too. No question that is not a real bezel insert.

Thank you. I have seen a newer version as well, but I have never seen this level of quality on an Omega dial; I'd guess it was repainted. Also thank you for pointing out the bezel insert!

Index on 12 looks a bit strange, though it does appear to be factory-made?
Send these photos to Omega.
Will be interesting get their comments.

The only fake dials of these ever printed that I have ever seen had applied markers a bit like the second generation. Ever.
My understanding is that these were produced by having a spot of paint applied to the dial and then having the Luminous compound attached to that spot, it's normal to see the kind of bump and Border like you have here, but what is not common is the way that border seems to be fraying.

I think it's possible something got into the dial at some point and is causing that edge adhesive to fail so it is pulling away like that. I don't think this was a printing error I think it is damaged, it's possible that someone tried to repair or repaint it.

I've seen and handled Indian produced fake Gen 1 dials. Well certainly repainted and passed off as original. They are out there and this could be one for all I know.

Really? That's great to know. If you happen to have any images I would love to see them

I may even have one of the dials unless I threw it out. I'll take a look when I get a chance

There were Chinese fakes too, when I first got into watches as a teenager in the late 00s I did a brief stint researching replicas and I remember seeing first gen SMPs on a replica watch forum. They'll have been out of production now for 20 years and the vast majority of them would be in landfill now I suspect, as they inevitably break. But they were made when the model was still current. Most current popular high end watches get faked, to varying degrees of quality.

It is theoretically possible this is a fake dial. I think it's more likely its just a gen dial with unfortunate quality control. The bezel insert is definitely a rep but that's far more common/unsurprising.

OP, if you ever send this in for factory service you could get both parts replaced. Omega may or may not want to replace this dial themselves as part of the service cost. The bezel will definitely cost you though. Last I asked them, which was in about 2022, a replacement bezel cost $380 AUD. You can't do the insert individually.

What's going on with that case back?

Which bit? The outside looked okay to me. The inside I noted didn't look as cleanly engraved as I expected but I've never paid much attention to what it's meant to look like as I never see mine for obvious reasons haha.

I have photos of one of my Bond era SMP's. They are not easy to photograph but if you compare to the one the OP posted, I'm pretty sure his is counterfeit.

The movement looks legit though. The fake movements of that era were a joke, though. But since they had solid casebacks most people would never see them. Maybe this is a frankenwatch?

The hippocampus shouldn't have the same bumpy texture as the surrounding area and the "SEAMASTER" text looks wrong. The whole image is off as well- which could be the result of overpolishing but it wouldn't explain the (what I see as) texture on the hippocampus.

Eh.... could just be the image. I can't conclusively tell.

So- I did some searching and I did find some pretty awful 2531 dial fakes that are a lot more recent.

originally posted by @inpersonout this one is all sorts of screwy-

there's another one in this thread- the first one- with funky plots that don't look right (watch was a franken with a modified ETA movement). Insane. maybe the older 2531 is getting to the point that it's worth faking a bit more.

I think the serial places OP's watch at the end of the 1120 run in mid-late 2006 or so. That dial is crazy though.

Hmm yeah that's more like I expected.

Suspect caseback, suspect dial, definitely fake bezel, I am leaning franken as well. I agree the movement didn't seem obviously fake to me.

The movement photo shows a serial number, which is a little tough to read but I think it's 81055378. Someone like @Archer can confirm if he sees this, but using one of those online serial checkers it comes up as having been manufactured in 2007, if I read the serial right. I thought the 2531.80 was discontinued by then.

You could be right, we could be looking at a franken. @karlenko123 can check the serial number to confirm, it should be the same on the movement, the underside of one of the lugs and the paperwork. I'm suspecting they will not align, or the serial will not align to a 2531.80 in the Omega database.

Hmm, I didn't really see it at first but looking at mine under magnification, you're right, the one in this post does in general seem to have a lot less depth to it and a bit more grain to the hippocampus compared to a known real one. The genuine hippocampus still has some grain though, but far less than the background. Here's mine:

Hate to say it but this is starting to look a hell of a lot more like a franken rep to me. 🙁

Jeez that inpersonout posted one is hilariously bad. The other is okay at a glance but lots of problems present. A bit like the one in this thread.

You can’t use online serial checkers with these, you have to do your own homework. I have reason the believe the last 2006 2531.80s ran in the 81.5m-81.6m range so this watch serial is not inconsistent with a late one. That said it’s suspect in many other ways.

@Jakeys, for the automatic Brosnan (2531.80) here's a rough serial list. should generally apply year-wise to the Peter blake models as well that use an 1120.

496XXXXX - 1993-1995
6011XXXX - 1995
6016XXXX - 1997
6023XXXX - 1998
6029XXXX - 1999
6045XXXX - 2000
8005XXXX - 2001
8010XXXX - 2001
8017XXXX - 2001
8035XXXX - 2002
8039XXXX - 2003
8045XXXX - 2003
8052XXXX - 2003
8057XXXX - 2003
8059XXXX - 2004
8063XXXX - 2004
8072XXXX - 2004
8078XXXX - 2004
8085XXXX - 2005
8092XXXX - 2005
8098XXXX - 2005
8099XXXX - 2005
8101XXXX - 2006
8100XXXX - 2006

someone on watchuseek originally put this together but I've added to it a bit. Please feel free to add to it as you can. I agree with padders that there's reason to think 06 production runs up past the 812XXXXX range.

Fair enough, lesson learned! I thought the online checkers were accurate for older models such as these.

What is the range for the 2541.80 out of curiosity, do you know? Perhaps I have the year wrong on my own watch as well, it's a 5769XXXX.

The quartz models used a different serial range that is mostly (iirc) in the 5 and 6 million range. I don't know much about their range other than that.
