That is also what I think, but though I love watches almost as if they were pieces of art, I admit beeing extremely ignorant about their inner life.

So what would be a safe rule of thumb to keep them swimm safe?

Omega recommends pressure testing at least once per year...see bottom of this chart:



The actual life of the various seals will depend on the watch and how it's used. For example if it is an automatic watch that you only use the crown to occasionally set the time or date, the crown seal will have far less wear on it than say a manual wind Speedmaster that gets wound every single day. It's not possible to say how long seals are going to last, so regular testing is important, and also regular maintenance (meaning replacement of seals).

Water resistance is not a permanent feature, and like anything else must be maintained.
