Hello everyone,

i am new here, searched for a topic that talks about the lume of the seamaster deville frome the 1960's, but did not find. I have my brother's watch, that is from our grand grand father. It was in a drawer since the 90's, and it works. I already restored a Tag Heuer serie 2000 ( quartz ) and i want to try something with this Omega, and try my first automatic watch. But before opening it, i was wondering about the lume's material. I see something that looks like old lume, in the hands, that are black, like painted in black, and a few old stuff on top part of the 12 dial that i can see with a magnifier, but not sure.

I know that around the 60's omega changed the lume for tritium and in the early process it was not mentionned with the usual "T swiss made".

Do you have more informations on that topic?

If it was made between 1962 and 1964 then it would have Tritium lume but no T marks. If earlier then the lume will be Radium.

I guess the only way to find out is to open the case!

Given that the dial says De Ville and not just Seamaster, and that the Seamaster doesn’t have a coathanger S, the lume is almost definitely tritium.

...or no "T's" means that it originally came without lume and was added to the hands later. There are no places for lume plots on the dial.

Shine UV light on it- if its radium it will glow and then disappear instantly when you swith off light.
If its tritium it will glow and take about 20-30 seconds to fade when you switch off

Or geiger counter if you have access to one.

That’s not true. There are small lume wells at the tips of the hour markers.

I’d say it’s highly likely this is a ‘pre T’ tritium dial but you’d need a Geiger to confirm

Hi everyone, thanks for all the interesting answers.

I tested the watch with a GQ GMC-300S Geiger counter.

  • Background radiation, measured several metres away from the watch: approximately 30 CPM / 0.12 µSv/h.
  • Directly on the closed watch, with the acrylic crystal in place: up to approximately 37 CPM.
  • The highest dose-rate reading observed on the watch was approximately 0.21 µSv/h, although readings generally remained around 0.12 µSv/h.
  • Under UV light, the lume on the hands glows, but the glow fades almost immediately when the UV light is switched off.
