How does accuracy and power reserve compare between the newer co-axial movements and the older 552 movements?

I personally have the same impression. It is an awesome watch but when setting time for example you feel that it is not as "tough" as a modern seamaster, seiko or rolex dive watch. Dont really know why. Nevertheless once set, it feels like it could handle everything

The time setting should not feel any less robust than any other watch. As I mentioned in another thread this is my beater watch, so I wear it whenever I'm doing some activity that might cause damage. I regularly wear mine playing tennis for example...

I think for most activities the differences between a modern watch and this one are minor enough to not really be a factor. People tend to forget that these watches were used as divers back in the day, as well as issued for military use. Not sure if this impression of fragility comes from the fact that people tend to be very careful with proper vintage versions of the SM300, and that comes mostly from the value preservation standpoint. But the case of the modern SM300 is plenty robust, and yes they are water resistant enough for most divers...

552 about 50 h power reserve
8500 about 60 h power reserve

The 55X and 56X series have an official power reserve of 38 hours. It's not unusual for them to run longer than this - can't say I've seen 50 hours but 47 or 48 sometimes. If you wear the watch every day, it really doesn't matter. These extra long power reserves are more about marketing than anything else, but would be handy over a weekend I guess.

Cheers, Al

Pretty minimal discrepancy, especially if you wear it every day.

I bought one from watchco and now rarely wear anything else for normal day to day and stuff like gardening. In fact for the past few months it's been the 300 or an f300 I bought a while ago.
The movement I got with mine is pretty much unused, really very good condition. The case looks ok but maybe not up to the original finish that you'd have got in the '60's. I had mine pressure tested before I started wearing it and it needed a new crown to make it waterproof.
On the other threads about the watchcos I've read of worn movements and failed pressure tests. However, when they're sorted they are tremendous things and I don't think there are many owners that don't like them. They are tough, waterproof and great looking and are, as many have already said, much cheaper than a 60's original and useable.

Now that Watchco is no more, where can I buy one of these?

There is no "sales outlet" for Watchcos.

Keep an eye out on our forum, or search eBay every day.

Now that Omega has restricted sale of donor parts to the general public, there will not be many more "Watchcos" so the main source of supply (aside from the fakes) will be from owners releasing their catches.

This one will not be released for quite some time (unless the offer is 😲).

I bought mine from watchco as they were in the process of moving to New Zealand. I had assumed that they were carrying on from there. If not then the watchco name seems to be used as a description for any similar watches made up by watchmakers who can get the parts. The only thing I can suggest is to put a WTB entry here and to trawl ebay and bricks and mortar auction houses (which are all online nowadays). In the latter they are often described as a seamaster 300 as if they are ´60´s watches so be careful.

There was a time when I loved these and had one but at this point there are so many better watches to buy for 6k quid, the cool thing was they were cheap and I swam with mine at the beach since it was properly water resistant.

For 6k quid I’ll buy a new SM300 and have a warranty

Can someone answer a simple question.
Has these Watchco built 165.024 seamasters really shot up in price because now they are harder to acquire?

found this one going for £6k
https://watchesoflancashire.com/product/1965-omega-seamaster-300-st-166-0324-watch-co/
I am very surprised by that price, especially as the seller describes it correctly as a Watchco. Of course asking for and getting £6000 are two different things. Make him an offer and see what happens.

@JimInOz None of these, the deck was on park configuration only that day 😉

Here is what the launch looks like (minus the sound and vibrations 😁 )

Ahhhhh..............steam catapults....only the best.

Unless it was night flying, and you were off watch and trying to sleep, and your mess deck was about 2B or 2C.

😁
