Money. Laundering.

isn't the idea of money laundering the idea that you get your money ("cleaned") back in some point in time? Buying such a model for such a price is like taking a suit to a laundry service and thereafter having returned 20% of your original suit by the workshop.

Does anybody think the $2.2M purchase of the Monaco was low ? Considering why this model is so iconic and thinking about prices of other sales, I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had gone for a lot more !

They tend to prefer more low key operations too imo.

Paying a world record price for an easily recognised issued watch at a Phillips auction would be money laundering through a loud hailer in a high viz jacket.

For many people the world is currently being flushed with extremely cheap money.

That result is ridiculous! 😲
The movement serial is way out of range for any Mil SM300... and might even not belong to a SM300. Could have been swapped during a MoD service in the past or later in it's life, who knows. But it is more than unlikely that the watch was issued with that movement.

You can cross borders with a watch on your wrist much easier than with a suitcase full of cash... hence some of the new "gifting" restrictions.

And as we've seen again and again - once one idiot (or a group of idiots) buy into the idea that something is worth X, well, that's what it's "worth".

Until it's not.

What. Utter. Nonsense.

ahh. . yet another go round at the "those high prices at Phillips must be money laundering" theme

because. . if i wanted to launder money what i would definitely do is pre-register, leave a public record open to tax authorities, wildly overpay on a relatively illiquid asset in broad view of the world. and then leave my bank details!

makes a ton of sense. as opposed to . . say. . buying on chrono 24 a liquid watch like a daytona or buying Bitcoin or Ether

Aurel has cultivated relationships over 20 years with the richest collectors in the world who do not care if they "miss" fair value by 10k on a 50k watch. 2mm for the Mcqueen Heuer doesn't buy a decent painting a Sotheby's contemporary day sale any more

Occam's razor applies I think

there is a guy on IG that claims to have bid on the Millsub. . odd behavior for a money launderer. I sold a Railmaster 2914-1 with Phillips a few years ago at close to a world record price. I know who the 2 bidders were and neither were money launderers --just one celebrity and one rich collector!

So: how does the process at Phillips work? You send them an email and then they will tell you whether they would consider selling?

Wouldn’t the movement number of 20,318,767 put it closer to 1963 than 1970 as stated? Don’t shoot, just asking.
