Omega or Rolex?

I'm not sure I understand the "Omega is a better watch from a technical view" and to say that Rolex or Omega look better is massively subjective. The 3235 movement from Rolex has lots of great technical enhancements but is reasonably untested. The 3135 had loads of improvements throughout the years that Rolex just didn't say anything about. It was a work horse and has been around for 30+ years. Omega with the dual barrels, silicon hairspring and co-axial escapement are all cool features but to the average person mean nothing. The issues seen on some earlier 2500 movements put a lot of people off. I love mine and it has been great. I have also never managed to magnetize a watch so to me half of it is marketing from both sides. I love both and wouldn't be without either. I think if you got to the Rolex forum you will get just as many skewed answers to that brand and the same amount of people that love both.

Quite a unsubstantial start of a thread from a noob with only 6 posts since registering end 2019, something is off.

Does it really matter? Still makes for an interesting discussion. It’s not like the OP entitled the thread “Why Omega Sucks” or “Why Rolex Is Crap” ...

the's OP one sentence "I love hearing both sides and everyones preferences in luxury timepieces. Reply with which you prefer and why!" without putting much on the table feels off. Also topic been discussed in numerous threads at length.

I can't decide between the two! I love both of the brands.

I don't compare brands and i can't decide to go with one of them, but i prefer specific models.

Speedmasters are always my final and best choice.

I’ll bite, just because I’m bored today. You can buy an Omega Speedmaster and an Omega diver of your choice (the new Professional, a Planet Ocean, or the 300 MC, even the Aqua Terra) new on the gray market (and even some ADs) for the same price or less than you can buy any Rolex steel sports model. Moreover, you can have them in days, not years, and actually enjoy them.

For these reasons alone, Omega wins.

I have 20 omega watches and 6 rolex watches. Does that mean omega wins for me?

Not necessarily.

I like both. And each piece has its own strengths. That’s why they are in my collection.

There’s no need to debate between the two brands by themselves.

If at all, we can debate the merits/demerits of particular watches.

Agree with @pongster

Each piece has it own merits as well as personal preference. Although relatively new to collecting I have Longines, Breitling and Omega pieces whilst at some point I will include Rolex into the mix... as long as SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) is agreeable 😗

Ginger or Mary Ann? Who doesn’t want both? Why is this even a question?

I hate to add to the thread drift, but I did have a childhood crush on Mary Ann.

Don't buy a name buy a watch you like, one of my favourites is my Citizen quartz chronograph which cost less than £100, it gets no attention other than a battery when it runs out, its beat-up, scratched to hell but still ticking and I love wearing it.

At the risk of stirring a huge debate…

I like both brands and their history but if I had to choose between modern Omega and modern Rolex it would be Rolex anyday (unless it’s the classic Moonwatch). I might be in the minority here but I really feel that Omega is butchering almost their entire catalogue.

For example, the 300M is nowhere near the watch it was 20 years ago. It might now be more advanced on every level but it’s too big, too thick and looks absurdly huge on any wrist in my opinion.
Same thing for the Planet Ocean range. The first Planet Ocean was an amazing dive watch, it was already a chunky and masculine piece but they’ve made it even bigger and thicker. Additionally, they blinged it up which made it lose its tool factor.
I am in the market for an automatic chronograph and would love to buy a Speedmaster but the thickness of the co-axial Speedmasters is a complete travesty, as a brand I would be ashamed of releasing such products. These watches may have better specs on paper but as far as wearability is concerned they get smoked by the Daytona or Zenith El Primero.

Omega also constantly churns out limited editions that, more often than not, don’t seem that desirable and you can find them in stores even years later. Especially the Bond (over)branded ones are totally ridiculous, I really wonder what grown man would buy and wear such a thing?
To me it doesn’t seem like they have a plan and go for quantity over quality, jumping at whichever bandwagon fashion dictates, with watches changing shape and color every other year. Rolex definitely also does things wrong but they keep their designs more consistent and their catalogue less cluttered, which (marketing aside) is also a reason why they’re so popular I think.

Okay, let me be clear, relative to the thread analogy: You have two choices - Mary Ann or Ginger; or Mary Ann AND Ginger?

Essentially this. If those who buy into Rolex Marketing and enjoy the "anticipation" of the call that may, or likely may not, happen, I hope you get the call.

Meanwhile I'll enjoy my Omegas and not look back......

What modern watch hasn't ? Rolex is surfed the "big watch wave" as well.
