Omega discount - Not?

I was in an Omega AD today shopping a Speedmaster. I asked her how much of a discount she could offer me and she said none. She said Omega does not allow them to do that any more.

Is that true? Have you all heard that?

I have not heard of an authorized dealer offering a discount. However, I would buy Omegas used mostly.

There was much discussion about this about a year ago. Omega has clamped down on OBs & ADs from offering discounts. I think you can occasionally find them out there, but it is become more of a rarity now from my understanding...

I haven't met an AD that does not offer some discount.

The key I found is the approach.

If you just go in and browse, then ask offhand if there is a discount, the answer is always NO.
In my experience, the discussion regarding discount always comes out when the associate is convinced that you are almost certainly going to make the purchase.

They don't want to show their cards too early.

So true. If you're just tire kicking they're going to say no. If you're serious, make an offer to them to see what they say.

For sure.

It helps to be informed and do your homework.
If you make stupid offers, they will shut you down and it will hurt your chance of getting anything in your future buys. You can push for a steeper discount if it is not a popular model. Expect only small discounts if it is a hot model that moves fast.

It's definitely an exhausting song and dance.

Oh, and don't listen to people who say "OH I ALWAYS ASK FOR 30% OFF OR NOTHING".
Dress watches maybe. You are not getting 30% off on a Speedy nowadays.

The spread between the wholesale price and retail price has been narrowed over the years on many luxury products, including things like cars and trucks. This naturally limits how much discount even an AD is willing to give, they don't want to give up too much of their profit. When you are ready to pull out your credit card you can always bring up if there is anything they can do on the price. If they won't budge on the price they will often be induced to throw in a new strap and deployant buckle which is about a $500 freebie. The days of getting 25% off a Speedmaster are long gone.

I've always been offered a discount BUT after showing up multiple times, establishing a name to name relationship, expressing interest(s) in specific pieces, being genuine... I would guess if I just came prancing in and asked about discounts before anything else I would get a resounding No -- which seems just.

Having just spent the last 6 weeks or so shopping around and trying various watches, in my experience you can negotiate a very small discount on a watch if you are paying in full. In the OB the discount varied between 2% and 5% depending on the model I was looking at, once I settled on the Apollo 8 Speedmaster the maximum I was able to get was £400 off the £9200 rrp. They are also still offering 0% finance and offered a £200 gift card if I went for this option, or £250 off a service. I found the ADs were pretty much the same as the OB with regards to discount off the rrp, but could be squeezed for slightly better deal in terms of gifts/services.

I have no history with any of the local OBs or ADs but made it clear I was serious about buying and not just kicking tyres!

Is there anything wrong with the "take bids" type approach? 1. Contact three or four ADs that are known to deal. 2. Make it clear that you are going to buy whatever soon and best deal will win. 3. Ask them to take their best shot. Has worked for me in the past.

At the local Omega AD I was able to get them to pay the sales tax (about $500). I retrospect I should have held out for an extra rubber strap.

Second guessing is bad for your health (although understandable). If you are/were happy with the deal you made a good deal.

I managed a 12% discount on a Speedmaster 3861 Hesalite from an AD in May this year, in Scotland. I made a firm offer, which was countered and we bashed it out, all very civil and respectful of course, he knew I was a serious buyer and we came to a good price. If there has been no negotiation I don't think I would have purchased and I think he knew that. I think its a cultural think to negotiate, some cultures do, some don't. I was brought up to negotiate and its in my DnA, it does offend some people but I an careful to back off when I sense the offence, this time I had a good rapport with the sales rep, I was wearing a 66 Constellation and also had my SMP300 with me, we talked watches for a while. I would say that helped with the negotiations. That would be my advice, let the guy know you're serious, talk watches, don't be in a rush, etc. etc.

They don't need your business and have plenty

I am really surprised. I would think there are enough uneducated buyers willing to pay MSRP for an Omega that they wouldn't have to discount!

I don't think it's a matter of having enough uneducated buyers, it's more of a supply and demand situation. The demand seems to be relatively strong for the new Speedmaster and Omega is not flooding the market with them to cause much discounting. In situations like this it doesn't matter how educated you are, the price isn't going to come down a lot.

It can depend on how many in stock and how easily replaced. A sale is better than a no-sale.

In September I purchased a hesalite 3861 Speedmaster at an OB. I was able to negotiated for either a 5% discount or an extra strap. I did not have a previous relationship with that particular boutique... must have timed it right.
