Hi, I found this gold watch which was owned by my grandfather and I would like to know it's value.

I don't do valuations.
Somebody else might.

We’ll need more information to help you. You need to take the watch to a watchmaker and have them remove the back. Then take pictures.

A watch like this is generally valued based on the weight of gold in the case and (non-Omega) bracelet, plus a small amount for the movement.

Wow, a century. It was the the 1st watch I tried to buy on eBay. I actually bid on it and thankfully didn’t win. On retrospect it was a horrible redial. It was a violet dial.🤦
But to be fair I didn’t know what a redial was then. Since then did some research on the watch and found this forum.
I remember from the research that the century is not a very remarkable moment, not to be confused with the centenary. I think it was a Canadian market exclusive. There is a thread on this forum about the model. Should be valued a tad above the gold value. Open it up and it should say what karat gold it’s made off. The watch case will be around 20gms of gold. Bracelet will be easy to weigh.

Here is the link to some lovely century examples in the forum.

The "value" is that it's a wonderful, wearable heirloom from your family. Many of us here would sell the gold bracelet for it's market rate, use the proceeds to get it serviced, buy a nice (perhaps alligator) leather strap, and have a meal out with the family to remember gramps.

I totally agree with this comment. I don’t understand people that sell family heirlooms. If it’s not for you that’s fine, but a son or relative it could go to in years time.

I’ve seen it both ways. People who will spend all kinds of money on a cheap watch so they can wear it. They end up spending far more than it’s worth to get it back running and would never sell it.

On the other side, I’ve seen people who have no interest in watches, and want to get rid of it to put that money to better use (for them).

In the middle sort of, are a few that wanted to keep it, but the estate was split between 2 or 3 people, and the one that wanted to keep it couldn’t afford to buy the others out, so the watch was sold. I had this with a vintage Patek I serviced a few years ago.

Just as an aside, on this forum there tends to be an automatic assumption that someone is asking the value to sell it when this request is made. However there are other reasons, such as the scenario I mentioned above where someone needs the value to buy out another relative’s share, or even a basic valuation to see if it’s worth insuring. So I wouldn’t assume it’s only to sell.

Good point.

if it is for sale it’s a shame though. I’m sure heaps of us would love something from our fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers collections.

could be just seeing how much the watch is worth out of curiosity.

OP wanted to know the value of his watch. Let’s just help him the best we can. I know I would like the know the monetary value of something that comes to my possession heirloom or not. I know it’s a public platform and we are all entitled to our opinions. But why do we want to make assumptions, worse still why judge if at all he wants to sell it. Don’t we have face book for all that?

I never said I want to sell it, I just want to know its value. And even if I wanted to, I would be fine with you not understanding me

Most of the time in here when people want the value they do so to sell. I like to know how much my own watches are worth just for the sake of it so I can understand that as well. At the moment you are right, I don’t understand you. Nobody does because you have been vague.
