Amazing feat of engineering. Scaled for use my mere mortals the design is surprisingly aesthetically pleasing. For such an extreme functional watch the dial looks great!

Love the fact that after being down to the deep they then sent the whole watch to METAS Dept!

If you read the Omega literature, it says this:

"The chosen maximum pressure is equivalent to the depth of the Mariana Trench, but to be extra sure and to comply with dive watch standards, OMEGA insisted on adding a 25% safety margin, which meant the watches had to perform perfectly at an astonishing 1500 bar / 15,000 meters."

Note that dive watch standards require that the watch is tested at 25% above the depth rating of the watch, so although it was tested to 15,000m, it is not rated to 15,000m. If it were rated to 15,000m it would have to be tested to 15,000+25%, so 18,750m.

I see what you are saying - it's kind of a fudge on their part, since they are putting the 15,000m on the back of the watch, but it is engraved as "tested to 15,000m" not that it is the official depth rating.

I'm in the minority but I'm smitten by this.
This is my grail watch now. I really want one.
Please god be under 10k.

I can start saving.

You better save more than 10K. I think it looks very cool but it is over an inch thick and there is no way to have a bracelet attached to the case. Sorry but that is a No Go for me and I like big watches.

Guys. This thing is a proof-of-concept piece. It can't be your grail because it's not going to be available to buy.

As it was written above, it is really a statement watch by omega to prove that it can go deeper...
It kind of reminds me the competition between omega and Rolex for Comex- omega did make a better watch, the Plo-Prof which was a superior watch but they were three years late and Rolex got the Comex contract.
So omega ended up with a great watch but a few years later they stopped it.
Of course you he vintage ones are collectible while the reintroduced ones are slow sellers...
(Personally I think that the Plo-Prof has great character)
Cheers

That makes it the perfect grail because if you can get it, it isn't really a grail

If they put that design into a 40-42mm steel case, less than 14mm thick I'd be all over it.

In fact if I'm wishing, chuck out the coaxial escapement and put a standard Swiss lever in there as well.

Terrible lighting, but the homie Jason Heaton gave it the old college try at the unveiling event...

Think of it like a concept car ... it's a test-bed for a lot of ideas. (And the current winner of one of the most important pissing contests in the watch industry.)

This, and the ultra-thin pissing contest. Ultimately though, I'd argue that no matter who wins or loses in the contest itself, watch fans win if the tech works its way through to commercial products.

Exactly so!
