Having seen pictures of this piece at an auction recently; I would be very, very cautious. For instance, the case back does barely seem to have a double step, which suggests it might have seen a serious polish. It could also mean the picture I have looked at is simply overexposed.
In its defence, the hands could be original if it's a later 2998. Like a 2998-6, -61 or -62. Even the hour counter subdial has an original hand, which does not have a nipple. This is a unique characteristic of an 2998.
Either way, an assessment on a piece like this needs very, very detailed pictures and due diligence.
For those who want to know about the case back...
That doesn't look so bad at all... 😍 Wow!
Although the engraving is a little 'fat'. Could be the result of the photography, perhaps deviations in production. At first glance I'd say it looks like this watch has seen very little wear indeed. It would be nice to know what that case back covers in terms of movement (condition?), serial and of course sub reference.
Polished "background surface" with no machining marks left but light scratches still visible on the lower edge and such a strong unmolested Seahorse makes me doubt this is the original finish...
Maybe seahorse was re-applied
