Hi Everyone,

Bought this lovely 2640 'jumbo' (measuring in at a whopping 36mm!), but it's missing the small steel bezel or is it a retention ring for the crystal?

Is it a specific part, or could I see if my watchmaker might have a spare that fits? - I had a look online but had trouble actually describing/searching for it.

Cheers! (It's been a while)

Find a nice member with that watch here, have him remove his bezel and have a few machined and pay him for his efforts. Then you have yours adapted to your case by your watchmaker and sell the other machined ones to recover your costs. Win-Win.

Except his bezel is intact, near as I can tell.

From your photos it looks as if the retention ring is still there - the reflection of the indicies indicate that.

However, it looks as if it is gold coloured?

The Omega 2640 and 2639 have a two piece waterproof case.

Indeed, looks like a mismatched crystal to me.

It may not be obvious from my photo, but on my piece there isn't the angled metal ring (shown above on a different 2640, and which i have seen on other vintage seamasters etc...), the case around the crystal is very flat.

I'm not sure what you would call this part. I may have misnamed it as the retention ring, as I know they are on the inside of speedmaster crystals.

If there was a missing bezel, there would be a ridge for it to attach to, and I see nothing like that. I believe it is a case varation or at worse a mis-matched case back.

As for the gold retaining ring inside the crytal, his numerals and hands are gold, so I don't see that necessarily as an issue, though iti might have been silver from the factory.

Lousy picture, Ed..... But: the flat step is where the bezel clicks in. It is missing. See the crown side pics with the left lug. The gap there is where the bezel would bridge the gap. So, again, bezel needed. Kind regards. Achim

@EdtheAussie and @watchyouwant - I have had several 2639s which is the same case but with a decentral seconds hand and none of these have had separate bezels. I have had only one 2640, I believe. The case is a two piece construction, case back and "mid case".

Note that there are variances of the 2639/2640 case; some have wider "hips" and some are slimmer in the design. It would seem that the one with the wider hips have a more angled protusion towards the crystal whereas it is flatter on the slimmer one.

For reference, here is one with an angled bezel:

From here.

Note that there is no removable bezel.

Ed, yours look perfectly fine to me.

I don't see a bezel missing from Ed 's pictures either, it is usually rather obvious when it is not fitted.
