Not just the USA, when I was about 14 years old here in NZ one of those distinctively marked little buggers bit me on the wrist, whole arm went numb and stiff for a week or 2, west Nile virus I suppose.
OZ and NZ are far apart but there is a strong breeze that blows through the Tasman sea and I guess this light weight pest blew on the trade winds.
