That watch is legit. Here is how mine looks like:
Now that we verified that it is indeed legit as we have a real 1:1 comp- do you think $20k for one in this condition is fair market value these days? Not asking to poke at the seller at all, I am curious to get a snapshot in time of what this reference, in this condition should bring.

IMO given what it is condition etc. $20k seems more than reasonable.

I don't get the attraction of these Racheros. What is it that makes them so collectible?

It’s a little more than that.

1. This was actually the least expensive Omega one could purchase in the US at that time. I believe it was quite successful, but most owners did not treat them well. “Waterproof” was wishful thinking on these. Between that and the radium, finding one with a decent dial is a challenge.

2. The model didn’t sell well (or at all) in Europe or South America, due to negative connotations of the Spanish word “Ranchero” in some cultures.

3. The arrow style hands have always been very popular with collectors. The Ranchero is probably the cheapest Omega with these hands. Go price a contemporary Seamaster 300 or Speedmaster.

Take care,

Nice watch, but I personally think anyone who would pay $20K for a Ranchero, NOS or not, must have either a screw loose or pockets that are waaaaay too deep! 😲 For that kind of money if I tried hard enough I'd expect to be able to just about score both a CK2913 and a CK2914

Or the full ‘57 Trilogy boxed set. That wouldn’t be a hard choice for me.

The attraction is that the Ranchero, which debuted in 1958, shares some of the features of the original 1957 trilogy watches, particularly the broad arrow hour hand. Hence its nickname as the “fourth Musketeer.” Aside from having a very attractive dial, it’s a very comfortable watch to wear at 36mm and it’s also quite thin. It was only manufactured for two years and original examples in good condition are very hard to find which makes it popular with collectors.

And let’s not forget the part about it being so unpopular at the time in some markets, that Omega replaced the dials and hands in them with more popular (at the time) silver Seamaster dials to sell off the stock- thus we get the “Seachero”.
Sometimes rarity is not becuase a watch was exclusive. In this case it was just not widely well received. But tastes change.

Correct. Another significant factor. By intentionally diminishing the available stock of Rancheros by converting them to Seacheros, Omega unknowingly set the stage for the Ranchero to eventually become a model sought after by collectors.

Lovely NOS piece!

One thing made me wonder. The logo on the Crown, i was under the impression they came without logo back then, but seeing this NOS one and MSN's Ranchero having logo on the crown changes that. I have several Ranchero and Seacheros, and owned more and never had one with logo on (unless new bestfit Omega replacement crown) , they were bowlerhat same style but without logo. Mayby some of them came without?

I love this reference but feel like that price tag is way too high in my opinion. What does this « NOS » adds to the mix compared to an extremely well preserved one? A sticker on the caseback? A pain if you intend to wear it and I would always consider the risk of someone putting a NOS sticker on a very nice watch to make it a NOS watch.
I feel like I’ve seen similar 2990 in extraordinary condition for a third of this asking price…
But what do I know…Maybe it’s already sold! 😁

Bingo. Our Danish member with several pristine examples and zero radium burn 👍

It's all because Denmark is cold.
And apparently 55% humidity, dark and within a high vacuum…perfect conditions.

And there I thought it had to do with the Excessive Electromagnetic Force (EEF) near the polar circle 🙄

Valuation is always tricky but looking at the comic book market the difference in price between a very good example and a pristine example can be 5-10x. The difference in availability between a very good and pristine example there might be 100x. The same is true here - for every 20 very nice Rancheros there is probably one pristine one. If that. Is that pristine one worth $20k? That's a personal decision. I will say though that if my primary goal in buying vintage omegas is investment then I would concentrate on buying only pristine examples.

This is how I have always thought about Ex+ vs NM or M in any collecting (or 1-10 with grading of finish on antique firearms). Once you hit a certain level the value escalates exponentially for each point- it’s not a practical formula in fact it’s rather emotional I think. But in any hobby, trying to apply logic is ridiculous- it all comes down to how badly you want it.

If you are looking for a super rare safe queen, this one is for you.
If you looking for a beautiful and rare watch to wear ans enjoy, then move on.

Personally I am not keen on safe queens and rather enjoy watches by wearing them, so I am not the targeted buyer for this one however I do think that the price for this time capsule is justified and it looks absolutely stunning.

Also very interesting to see a Ranchero in NOS condition as reference.
