I know it's not Omega but I own a Nina Rindt Compax Panda Universal Geneve! I bought it in 1979 in Basel Switzerland and during the early years this fine chronometer was worn day to day. I now realize the value to be upwards of $40,000
Should I sell ? How should I sell? How should I reach the right buyer? I am afraid although my watch collection is small it is all in my price range of up to £4000 would I ever dare to wear my beloved compax for fear of being mugged! I might consider selling in a couple of months. Christie's? This forum ? Any Ideas? By the way it is the earlier desirable version with Geneve below the Universal and the thin hands.

Upwards of $40k? Have things really gone that nutty? Good for you. We have a Universal Geneve subforum here, a more appropriate place to post this. I will bring this to the attention of moderator @LouS so that he might relocate the thread.

Moved to UG forum.

As far as being mugged goes, only connoisseurs are going to appreciate the value of this watch. If you find yourself the focus of attention of a group of middle-aged men wearing vintage Heuers and Zeniths, you should be very concerned. Otherwise, I think you are safe.

If you sell on a watch forum, you're going to have to propose an asking price. An auction site like Ebay - if the watch is listed correctly with good pictures - will let the watch find its true value. An auction house may generate a higher final price by virtue of clientele with deeper pockets (maybe), but will also take a bigger bite of the sale price as commission (for certain).

If it's not too late, you may want to wait for feedback from the forum on what should be done at service time. Things like polishing the case or replacing the hands may detract from the value, and ultimately, the price achieved at auction. Not by 50% or anything, but why throw away a few extra dollars if you don't have to?

I have not authorized anything as yet so thanks. I also need to be cautious as the cost of service etc is charged as a % of value!! not sure if they will realize as I have been a bit economical with the truth.

Unfortunately not the best way to get maximum price. Collectors like these as-is, are are very picky about who touches their watches, especially at this level. I don't think $40k is a realistic number regardless. From experience the factory does more harm than good servicing vintage pieces. If its not too late you may want to stop whatever service is being done if you are serious about getting top dollar.

It is not a good idea to service a watch before sale. The only exception is sometimes in the case of broken watches.

Collectors want to buy their watches and then do with them as they see fit. Some service them regardless of whether or not the seller serviced it. Collectors are finicky. They want their own watchmakers to do the work. They also don't like cases to be polished or dials restored. Keep it as original as possible.

Why on earth is the service cost charged as a percentage of the value? That sounds very dodgy.

Given that you have reservations about eBay - and probably rightly so - I think you should consign this to a reputable auction house in a specialist watch sale. You will have to pay a higher sellers premium but you will attract a batter audience with deeper pockets.

I expect you have already received many offers on this forum, from the sublime to the ridiculous, but IMHO the auction house would be your safest bet.
