Had a recent discussion with someone about leather..

Have never had a issue with anything leather getting a little wet.

Yes, yes…I know I am not talking about dress watches with $200 leather straps.


This one gets wet all the time, both watch and strap….

Leather saddles on horses, leather hats, bags whatever. Leather is waterproof…….

Most leather bike gear I have had has a remarkable ability to retain water and stain your skin purple.
Chamois leather absorbs water rather well too.

It would appear that my regional OB would disagree with you... They tell me to avoid moisture and humidity...

Just bought a new pair of Lucchese boots from a local western store. The salesman kept insisting that I have them waterproofed at the store (at a further cost, of course) because they would deteriorate within a few months in the Florida humidity. I politely refused and I’m sure they will last for decades with regular conditioning in the Florida humidity and an occasional rain storm, just like my other pair.

Yes, leather is waterproof, to an extent. But you also have to make sure to dry it and to condition it regularly to keep that up. Once the skin is off that cow, it’s natural oils (which keep the water out) fade away, which is why you need to condition it regularly. With that said, while I have no problem wearing a dive watch on a leather strap in a rainstorm, I’m sure as heck not wearing it on that leather strap to go swimming!

That leather looks fine. It’s the glue that’s not waterproof.

Back in the day, I treated my leather hiking boots with beeswax.

But they got hair on their leather. And they are not dead. And their leather is attached to all the steak on one side (the inside)…which keeps it regenerative. I think the title is totally misleading … it should be ‘Living hairy leather is waterproof’ 😁

Not quite. Leather changes the composition and structure of water. Gold doesn't. Gold is waterproof. Leather is not. For the record, cows are not waterproof either.

It's actually legit science that dates back to the 18th century, known as Lavoisier's law of conservation: if A transforms B then B is not A-proof and A not B-proof
