Some types of tanned leather have been found in shipwrecks hundreds of years old in near-perfect condition. It used the "Russia leather" tanning technique.

I've had quite a few pairs of walking boots, made of leather, and with mink oil applied two of three times a year, they keep my feet dry, as long as it (the water not the oil) doesn't come over the top of the boot,, in fact the only reason i change them is because the sole wears out, not because they start letting water in
i've found mink oil does need to be left to soak in to the leather for a week or so or it leave s a slight residue, but nothing catastrophic/clysmic/tonic
