Hi all, I am newbie in collecting vintage watch and still learning on identifying authentic watch. Recently, I found one fastastic looking cal.266 watch on ebay, it seems too good to be true. Hence, I did some research on this and found out that the serial number dated to 1953 and i found some similar dial in white but couldn't found the dial in black / in similar marker. There are some glue like substance at the end of marker, especially on 5 O'clock, not sure if it was patina or some glue. Is that authentic? Was planning to invest one, but as far i heard, there hell lot of traps on ebay. Does anyone seen a model like this? Thank you.
The substance you are referring to is the remnants of lume. Incidentally, I have the same reference with a black dial, although mine has numbers at 9, 12, and 3 instead of the markers. You can see it in my intro thread. I don't post photos of it often because I actually gave it to my wife. https://omegaforums.net/threads/introduction-and-my-modest-omega-collection.75096/ Sorry, these are not great photos, but they are what I have on hand.
Hi Dan, Thanks for the info, real appreciate. The collection you have in your intro thread are so beautiful! Wish i could have them. I've been actively looking for ref for this watch as i really like it, and yea I've come across model like yours with numeric marker but couldn't find one exactly the same in black dial which bring me to cautious, as i seriously lacking of knowledge but so eager to buy one . It's so frustrated when I came across one really liked but doesn't know if it's a "real-deal". Cause, a watch from 50s in such mint condition raised a red-flag especially after reading up much posts in regarding the "notorious" ebay. Anyway, thank you very much for the sharing, at least now i know the substance is remnants of lume. good day.
The one you posted is a 2639-15, and mine is 2639-5, so yours is a later run of cases, consistent with the later movement. It's not surprising that the dials are different. If you search for omega 2639, you can find a lot of different dials.
