and this is a collectors forum Your words

English is not everyone’s first language here. Members will not want to share their knowledge and experience with someone who just wants to argue, so if there’s a language barrier causing your misunderstandings and combative interpretations of everything people are trying to tell you, it would be helpful to be up front about it.

Some things don t add up. You didn’t know about the « sell » on eBay, but you are using original pictures from eBay seller. Your wife gave you the pictures along with the watch? You told us that this is your first omega vintage watch, but now you are showing us another gold seamaster 2848 sc ?? i don t follow.

The second watch is a cut-and-paste from this post: https://omegaforums.net/threads/seamaster-cal-501-advice-please.82081/#post-1052783

Either the OP is finding communication and technology a challenge or there’s something else they’re not telling us.

Happy New Year OFers and Good 2024 Hunting!
I would like to know for my education. The wordings on caseback that I marked with red color seem ink imprinted (!?), which is the first time I see on Omega watches. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

The first one is a case serial number, not to be confused with the serial number on the movement.

The second set of numbers are the case reference numbers, this is a dual reference case, 2848 referring to the sub-seconds movement and 2846 to the center seconds movements fitted to this case.

In actuality they are engraved, it's just how the light is hitting the engraving.

These appear the same, however when viewed at an angle they are bright an shiny.

Look, you have a genuine Omega watch with replaced hands, a heavily polished case and repainted dial.

It is not considered “fake” by any collector I know. However, these flaws do hurt the value significantly. If your wife can return it, she should. At that point, maybe some of us can help you pick something better.

It would also be helpful if you use punctuation and proper spelling. I know it is no longer considered fashionable among the younger generation, but it does help people understand what you are saying.

Your watch is not worthless, it's just not collector grade which most of us try to collect.

Originality (as it left the Omega factory) is all important to "us weird collectors".

To the rest of the world who buy a vintage Omega watch on the internet or even in a shop, the road is fraught with danger for the uneducated.

The fact that your wife bought you that watch would, if it was me, make it more valuable than any other watch that you see elsewhere.

So get over it, enjoy the watch for what it is and what it means, and go and hug your Missus.

Regarding the second watch he’s linked to, he’s quoting my post with a pic of my gold 2846 to show that the hands on his may be correct (I don’t think they are the same). It looks like he’s being deceptive but I don’t think that’s the intention, it’s just sloppy quoting. It’s a nice watch with a tidy 60s pattern redial which is a shame since it will jar with collectors as it’s a mid 50s piece, but not 95% of humans who will see it as charming.

It’s part of the collection journey - some deals are better than others but everyone makes small mistakes along the way.

The watch is absolutely NOT worthless. Wear it and enjoy!!

Next time you or your wife buy a watch, post it here BEFORE you buy it, so people can help you assess whether it is fully original.

I presume you are joking but gold 2846s are built like tanks, I suspect there is 20g+ of gold in them so the melt value alone is over £750. As a data point, the caseback weighs over 8g.

I find eBay sellers are not pedantic about part numbers.

They also can be really lazy shipping stuff. Ordered stuff last week. Got a tracking number over the weekend. Still waiting for shipping.

One never responded to a simple message. I do not think they care.

Most of this is estate sale bench sweepings anyway.

To a new collector. Buy it, enjoy it, and don’t concern yourself about the opinions of others! You’ll end up hating your purchase.
