    Hello all,

I am interested in making my first vintage Omega purchase, and have found you all to be very helpful and informative in identifying a good watch. I know bidding on eBay can be risky, but have identified a Seamaster (Cal. 501) I think might be a winner.

Any help in determining if this watch is authentic and original (untouched dial, hands, movement) would be very appreciated.

    Thanks!

Looks like a nice original watch.

If you're bidding, set a maximum for yourself and stick to it, it's easy get too carried away.

Apart from the worn crown (minor issue!) it looks absolutely great :)

Worn crown overruled by lovely dial. And I could live with the worn crown rather than try to find an exact replacement.

You may have a bit of rotor rub due to a worn bushing/post, but you are going to get it serviced anyway when you win it aren't you!

I used to be of the opinion that gold plated and gold capped cases were a red flag for me on several grounds. Firstly the intolerance to wear and unsuitability for repair and secondly on the basis that it was on one level pretending to be something it wasn't. Then I got a gold cap Connie and was swiftly persuaded that I was wrong, on the gold capped models anyhow. They have a charm all of their own and the sheer thickness of the gold layer means they can tolerate a bit of abuse and even mild refinishing if necessary. I am still leery of gold plated watches and wont go near one but gold cap (like the OP watch) has won me over and while I would prefer solid steel or gold, would buy the OP watch at the right price in the blink of an eye.
