New Speedy Incoming - Did I get a good deal?

So I abruptly came across a deal I could not pass up and was wondering if it is, in fact, a deal: It is a new Speedmaster Pro, 1861, on a leather strap. It is coming from an AD but being sold as a "returned" model. Essentially, a customer bought it, didn't wear it, and returned it in exchange for something else within the 14 day return period. The jeweler sells watches like this at a discount online occasionally, and it isn't coming with the big fancy space box and extra straps - just a plain old Omega wooden box. Given that I really only care about the watch itself, I'm fine saving dough and foregoing the goodies.

The cool thing is, I spoke to the shop, and they said they are giving me a 2-year warranty. If anything goes wrong, I am to send it to them and they will send it to Omega and cover costs. So, it's basically like an Omega warranty but unofficial. I assume this is not smiled upon practice but it makes sense to me since they technically can't sell the watch as "new" even though it is in pristine condition. The price was $2600. Good or bad deal?

The warranty is a bit odd. The standard two year warranty is direct with omega anyway. They aren't really giving you anything there.

It is an Omega warranty in the sense that they will send it to Omega for any repair in the next two years no money out of my pocket. They will not attempt to service it themselves.

I can't say if it's made in 2016, but it is the updated model.

A "service" and a warranty repair are two very different things. If it is brand new and you need warranty work then you could take it to any AD or OB and have them send it to omega without any cost to you anyway.

Right - I think they just can't give it to me officially since they would be breaking policy by selling the watch online. I figure it's better than GM which would offer no warranty through Omega at all. At least this way if something went awry within two years I'd be covered. Isn't the danger of the GM that if the movement malfunctions one is out of luck, i.e. you have to pay out of pocket for the service?

It's not being sold as new, but they assured me they would have Omega repair anything that goes wrong for 2 years. So to me this is "warranty repair", not service.

If it's bought GM and the serial is in tact and you have the warranty card then there's no worries. As far as I recall the warranty is from two years of original purchase, I'm not sure it matters if you are the first owner or not

I was always under the assumption that purchasing GM means you get no warranty for repairs. I bought my Seamaster from jomashop and they did not include the warranty card, just the pictogram card. They aren't allowed to sell with a warranty as per Omega's policy, AFAIK.

I got my speedie pro, just the same as the one you're looking at with all the accessories, from a GM. serials and warranty card all good and proper

Fair enough! Can I ask what you paid and whether it was one of the big online watch dealers like authenticwatches.com or jomashop.com?

You can ask. I got it in a retail store here in the UK, iconic watches. It's here..

Looks like a good deal - though not when exchanged into USD! The price for this watch on Jomashop.com, with the extra straps, special box, etc, is $3150. I was happy saving an addition $550 to forego those things since I'm fine taking the regular Omega box.

Perhaps someone can chime in re: the warranty question. Maybe it's different in the UK, but here Omega seems to explicitly exclude any non AD from being able to offer a warranty. Their website even warns against purchasing watches online for this very reason (among others).

I think you are being overly optimistic that the seller will have any repairs performed by Omega and at no cost to you. I would hope this is in writing, very clearly spelled out. If not it isn't the end of the world, it just means (to me) it isn't as good a deal.

It's in writing. They are an AD after all- long time family business selling Rolex, omega, etc. they are just sort of bending the AD rules a bit here.

Oh yes! That mistake will never happen again- though I will one day give him that Seamaster with the nice dent he put in it!

The speedy is a keeper for daddy.
