I just ordered a new speedy master. Being as I have had only automatic chronograph watches I am unsure of how much to wind it starting off,or how often and how many times after whether daily every few etc... Also I've heard there is a trick to hacking the second hand not sure I would feel comfortable doing that any advice appreciated.
Wind it fully, until the crown can't be turned anymore, i.e., a hard stop. Wind it everyday at about the same time. The new 3861 movement in the current Speeedmaster hacks, so when you pull the crown out it will stop, making setting to exact second easy.
Welcome to manual winders! ^ what he said. No need to overthink it- it should wind pretty effortlessly and as the spring builds tension you will feel slightly more resistance. Once you feel it getting stiff you can stop or wait until you hit the hard stop. Unless you are Conan the Barbarian, it’s unlikely you will over-wind it or break the spring. My 50 year old Speedy goes 48hrs on a full wind (almost to the minute). It won’t lose time as it winds down (I don’t hack nor care if I am that close so I never noticed it), it will just stop- so if you skip a day it’s not an issue.
The 3861 has a real life run time of about 62 hours so you could go two days between winds but I find doing that makes it easier to forget a day and you'll end up with a stopped watch. Just wind it everyday, make it a part of your routine.
I appreciate the comments I was debating between the one I ordered and a reduced but I decided on the professional with sapphire
You got a nice watch. Remember these are meant to be worn and the first scratch always hurts the most. Eventually you will be rock scrambling while wearing it.
So it isn't the new Speedmaster 3861, then has a non hacking movement in it. Here's a vid from our resident watchmaker how to hack: https://omegaforums.net/threads/hacking-non-hacking-movements.148777/#post-2028325
I could have gotten one with the hesalite crystal but I figured the sapphire is more durable and less maintenance. The watch has never been sold so I'm the first owner, I honestly prefer the non display caseback.
I'm confused, your new watch has a sapphire crystal but a solid back, which model is this? How old is it?
Well finally received my speedy the seller sent an 1861 solid back and hesalite crystal instead of sapphire. I n the grand scheme it could have been worse
Well, everything about the watch is wrong. The case- it has the wrong shape and is also too tall because it has the wrong movement in it. The pushers and crown aren't on the same plane/in line with each other, because of the movement. The pusher/crown orientation is like that of a Speedy Reduced. The case back- has the wrong font, spacing, engraving, and the hippocampus (along with being incorrect) is huge. The dial- font is wrong, the sub dial spacing is wrong, and all of the hands are incorrect. I'm sure there would be other tells but the suspiciously tight cropped dial photo hides them. Edited for better readability.
I need to work on my eye because the red flags didn't jump out at me. I had to look at some side-by-sides and the differences became clear. As mentioned, the spacing of the sub-registers and the sub-register hands are very different. On the back, the hippocampus is way off and the grooves for opening the case are much different. @towboat Where did you buy it?
