New here, need help on identifying this old seamaster

Hello everyone, i just got into vintage watches, looking for a vintage seamaster for myself and i set my eyes on this 2846. I have very little knowledge on identifying a geniune watch so I need your help here.

My knowledge is limited to checking the model number on the caseback and the serial number on the movement, and to see if the years matched. The model 2846 came out in 1956, the numbers on the movement suggest it was made around 1954.

So my first question is, does this mean the movement is not the original one? i know the years are only for an approximation, what is the marginal of error here?

And the second question is a bit boarder. Is this geniune? if not, which part tells you that it isn't?

I'm really into this, so information related to this vintage model or anything is welcome. Thanks in advance.

As you say it’s an approximation so the movement seems fine. Albeit a bit tired looking.

The watch is genuine. It’s not usual to see good fakes from this period. More common are redials which significantly impact value and collectability. The dial here looks original.

The determining factor will be price. Have a look through old sales posts on OF to get a flavour for what these sell for.

Yeah, the movement needs a bit of care. Thank you for your information and advice. I'll take a look.

Good starter watch with a nice dial…

Foot in the door watch is always priced a bit over what we would pay so…tell us what it’s gunna cost you and we can advise.

Country helps also as there is a price for…..
US 🇺🇸 UK 🇬🇧 Aussie 🇦🇺 and EU (too many flags) and they vary a few $$s

well, it might be a strange situation to you, I live in China, and i found this watch on a chinese copy of ebay. The dealer listed the price for around 480 usd(3500 rmb) and i talked to him to bring the price down to 400 usd(2900 rmb). From my observation, vintage watches in general are probably cheaper here since the majority of the people who are into this doesn't have the access to makrets like chrono24 and ebay which leads to low liquidity, take that into account, is this a legit price? btw I already purchased it, the dial looks even better in the video that the dealer sent to me.

That cal 501 might never look pristine again but I bet it’s reliable for another 70 years. A good clean and a service should be what the doctor ordered.

Not much risk at that price. Assuming you will receive it..

$400 is a good price. I would be happy with that as a starter to vintage. Good service and as above mentioned your in for the next few years of a decent reliable watch.

Have seen hundreds over the years pay more for a watch not in as good condition. The dial is ok in my book without much patina.

The movement is tired….. and over regulated (red arrow bellow)
And (green arrow) area needs to be looked at.

Get it, service it, love it. This watch is no show room new old stock watch, but you know that already. You can wear it all day everyday once serviced without worry. Remember omega’s sales pitch back then. “For town , sea and country”.
