Is anyone able to actually predict what tariffs will be due on watches being imported to the US, now there are possibly 10% tariffs on several European countries.

Is this 10% in addition, and is it based on the selling country or the country of manufacture?

May as well ask a magic 8 ball. These things are changing all the time at the moment.

It is based on country of manufacture, so this 10% does not apply on Swiss watches. For the Greenland suporters from the EU the 10% will be added to the 15% already in place. For the UK it will be 10% + 10% as i understand it.
This could all go away if the Supreme Court does the right thing this ( hopefully) coming week when they publish the verdict on Tricky Don`s tarrifs.

If this turns into another US politics thread we’ll have to lock it. Very sick of that topic ruining threads and causing us moderation work.

There’s already a 15% tariff on Switzerland, isn’t it?

Just bringing up the topic of Greenland tariffs automatically brought US politics into it. You might as well shut it down now because any response will have a political slant.

TBH, I'm just holding off on buying expensive watches internationally until the whole mess stabilizes. Too much uncertainty. I have read some threads on this forum and others that seems to suggest a 15% tariff on Swiss watches paid by the shipper, but then other people occasionally post some crazy duty they were required to pay. I just don't know what is true.

Maybe a sticky for those having questions of this nature to refer to various government websites?

Both … Just make it all go away.
Unfortunately my Ruby slippers are caught up in customs, else "There's no place like 2012, there's no place like 2012".

There will certainly be tariffs on German watches coming into the US, and for the other countries it depends on where the parts are made.

For imports to the US, for years customs was only interested in the origin of the movement. But over the last year they have started asking for origin of other parts - like the case and strap. So for a watch like Sinn for example, the movement would have whatever tariffs are applied to the Swiss, while the cases made in Germany will have another tariff rate, and possibly something else for a strap or bracelet.

So there's no easy answer as to what rate will be applied to what watches.

It is based on country of manufacture, so this 10% does not apply on Swiss watches.

For Omega, many of their leather straps are made in France, so those would be affected by this tariff.

I don’t see the need to shut it down. Surely we can separate the cause from the effect?

Correct.

Which showes how complicated everything is.

This is an epoch that encourages face to face transactions, especially long distance acquaintances.

I’m just looking forward to the summer. I’ll have a nice Omega watch on my wrist, a nice tan, a gin tonic, and will be kayaking on the water without any interest about tariffs.

That looks like a serious piece of kit and as you’ve said I suspect many happy hours have been spent going nowhere in particular.
